How To Create High Updos For Bridal Styling

The “2024 Bride” has hair with voluminous body and sleek contours within a sky-high updo. Pamela Anderson-inspired updos swept last year’s social media searches and we’re seeing a classic take on the sultry look across bridal styling requests this year.

To build this style, you’ll need structure and foundational techniques that look soft and elegant. Our pros chimed in with their product recommendations and styling tips, so let’s get started.

#1 Balancing The Silhouette

The biggest mistake in bridal styling is not having a balanced silhouette. An updo cannot only look good from the front or side—every angle has to have symmetry, appear full in opposition and avoid flimsy loops or holes in volume at the root.

This stunning updo from Jocelyn Emerson (@updos.by.jocelyn) hits the volume, flyaway-free, shine and intentional separation marks at every angle. To create this look, Jocelyn shares her products used.

“These products have become staples in my bridal styling kit,” says Jocelyn.

1. Strategic root volumeSchwarzkopf Professional® OSiS+ Dust It Mattifying Volume Powder

2. Tame flyaways and create smooth separation: OSiS+ Thrill Fibre Gum

3. Strong hold and styling control: OSiS+ Freeze Medium Hold Hairspray

Schwarzkopf Professional Global Color Ambassador and A-list celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton (@chrisappleton1) shares three easy techniques on IG to instantly adjust your bride’s updo for a face-snatching look.

Three must-try changes to enhance bridal hair silhouettes:

1. At the face-framing section, insert curling iron at eye level and pull away from the face. We all know curling hair away from the face opens up any look, but placing your iron strategically at the eye line is quick hack anyone can implement to their bridal styling!

2. Give your clients a middle part. EVEN if they are die-hard side part wearers, show them the option of how much centering their part line can create symmetry for their face shape.

3. Angle ponytails up instead of back. When we hear a request for a sleek ponytail, we usually envision a snatched back look, but the real lift comes from angling the foundational point up towards the apex instead of back in line with the eyes.

#2 Building Volume & Structure

Bridal hair specialist and educator Amanda Fiorita (@amandafioritahair) walks us through foundational steps in building a high bun that lasts for any bridal client.

1. Prep work: Starting with a heat protectant,, Amanda will blow-dry and crimp the frontal root area to begin building internal volume.

2. Root grip: Once crimping is in place, Amanda uses OSiS+ Texture Craft Spray to create grip on the roots for controlled styling,

3. Curl placement: “I curl the hair using a non-aeorosol pump hairspray because I love that the wet spray gives the hair shine and hold,” Amanda explains.

4. Finishing hold: “I love to using the OSiS+ Flexwax to create texture at the front and a strong-hold hairspray at the end to hold the style,” she says.

#3 Strong Hold Without Stiff Texture

PSA: Your bride’s hair still has to look like hair. Struggle to finish an updo without over-doing hairspray or accidentally kicking up flyaways from smoothing spots with a comb?

If you do—This hack using a color brush with OSiS+ Freeze Hairspray to gently lock flyaways down by California-based stylist Erin Munoz (@hairbyerinc) has us screaming, “HOW did we never think of this!?”
