3 Smart Toning Hacks For Dimension
Creative Toning Techniques For Trendy Pink Haircolor
What’s the secret to bright, creative color looks? A clean, even base. Learn how to achieve just that with Lesley Jennison (@lesleyjennison), Global Colour Ambassador for Schwarzkopf Professional as she shares her technique for creating a dimensional result using creative color. Take your clients into summer with this beautiful, dusty pink that’s going to be trending all season.
1. Start with a detox mask.
Lesley says that it is so worth it to apply the Schwarzkopf Professional Detoxifying System Shot for 10 to 20 minutes before starting the lightening process. This pretreatment saves you all the hassle and stress that comes with lightening a client without knowing their entire color history.
The detoxifying shot is paired with the BLONDME® Keratin Restore Bonding Mask to remove harsh water minerals and other residues to allow you to really understand the canvas you’re working with. Formulated with Vitamin C, the detoxifying shot neutralizes dull and brassy tones in blondes to leave hair healthy and full of shine.

2. Use only three colors to achieve a dimensional look.
Although Lesley uses just three colors during her toning process, she says that the end result will appear to have many more because of the way the tones are layered.
Here are Lesley’s formulas:
Formula A (Dark): Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME® Toner 20g Nougat + 20g Strawberry + 2-volume BLONDME® Premium Developer
Formula B (Medium): Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME® Toner Strawberry + 2-volume BLONDME® Premium Developer
Formula C (Light): Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME® Toner Ice Irise + 2-volume BLONDME® Premium Developer

- To start the toning process, Lesley separates her model’s hair into three sections.
- Next, at the nape, she applies the darkest color (Formula A) all over.
- Then, starting above the occipital bone, she applies Formula A to the roots and Formula B to the length.
- On the top section, she applies Formula B to the roots and Formula C to the ends.
- To finish her toning application, Lesley applies Formula C to create that bright face frame that clients love.
3. Don’t worry about perfect application.
Lesley says that the less perfect your application is, the better the blend will be in the end. With this technique, the beautiful, muted tones you’re using work really well together so it doesn’t matter if they touch. No foils needed!
PRO TIP: The only time Lesley uses a foil when applying toner is around the neck and nape areas to protect her client’s skin.
