The 4-strand braid is the perfect plait to have in your styling arsenal. Whether you’re using it as a foundation for a chignon or creating a stand-alone braid, it’s versatile and looks seriously amazing on every type of hair (straight, curly and crimped!). We have the technique and all the steps you need to master this look, plus a full video how-to below!

HOW-TO STEPS

1

Create four ponytails of equal size and secure just below the nape. Then, number the strands into four sections (1-4 from left to right!).

2

Follow the 4-strand technique. Start by crossing 4 over 3, then under 2. Cross 1 under 2 and 4 over 3.

3

Cross 1 under 2, then over 3. Cross 4 over 3 and 1 under 2. Repeat this pattern to the end of the braid and secure.

4

Expand the braid by pulling out the sides. Flip the braid up and over, then pin it to the head to hide the tail.
