The Eurovision International Song Contest 2024—aka “The Olympics of Song and Lyrics”—was recently hosted by Malmö, Sweden. With 2.3MM viewers tuning in for the Grand Final to watch the world’s biggest live music event, we found ourselves backstage in the true beating heart of the competition: “The Moroccanoil® Bubble.” The presenting sponsor invited BTC Editors and Influencers to an exclusive look inside the luxe salon destination for all things hair and beauty.

The Bubble is not only where every artist (referred to as ‘delegates’) and dancer performing gets their hair done for the show, but where 33 Moroccanoil® artists join together from countries all over the world to form the Global Styling Team for the weeks leading up to the final, led by Moroccanoil® Global and Eurovision Creative Director Antonio Corral Calero (@antonioccalero)

Eurovision 2024 Cheat Sheet: What You Need To Know

If you’re reading this—and most likely from The States—thinking, ‘Hey, this looks like a cool opportunity for stylists, but what exactly is Eurovision and how big is it actually?’… Here’s your 101 rundown of the pop-cultural significance, historical highlights and importance of the event.

  • Eurovision was established in 1956 and is one of the longest-running TV programs. It’s the world’s biggest song contest that annually brings countries across Europe (and beyond) together to compete with original songs.
  • The contest has catapulted the careers of international artists such as ABBA (who Sweden honored with a tribute for their 1974 win with hit song ‘Waterloo’), Celine Dion, Måneskin, Conchita Wurst and Loreen (who won for the second time last year on behalf of Sweden and performed at the 2024 contest.)
  • Eurovision isn’t just a song contest; it’s a spectacle of hair, beauty and fashion that pushes boundaries and sets trends. From avant-garde styles to dramatic hair and makeup, the contest inspires others to embrace boldness and individuality.
  • 2024 Winner: Nemo from Switzerland took home the title with certified bop ‘The Code,’ so the country will be hosting Eurovision 2025.

Backstage “Speed Station” Dates: BTC Interviews the Global Styling Team

We asked your most burning questions about creating the hair for Eurovision 2024, and the Global Styling Team delivered.

How do you build the Global Styling Team?: “You need to have a very good spirit before anything. It’s not about us. It’s about making people feel good and confident. Being together [as a team] gives us power. When you know exactly what you’re here for and you put yourself last, you empower others to showcase their talent. Every year that we’ve been doing this (almost 5 years), we’ve been empowering them. By doing good to others, [we’re] doing good to ourselves.”

Most used product backstage: Root Boost—versatile for volume and texture, and easy to layer with other products.

Advice for stylists who want to work Eurovision: “When your mind is open, the learning never stops. You just keep growing and that to me is so important. Lead with kindness, that’s all we do here. We really insist that everyone treats each other and the artists with kindness, they’re going through a very big time in their life. It’s so emotional and stressful for them, that really those moments in the chair with their stylists—you can see the stress melt away for the 30 to 40 minutes while they’re there.”

Most used product backstage: Luminous Hairspray Strong Hold—gets the delegates and dancers through an entire song with their hair in place.

How would you describe Eurovision to someone who has never been?: “It’s crazy. The Eurovision audience is like nothing else. No matter what language the artist is singing in, everyone in the crowd knows it. It’s colorful and fun.”

Best advice for stylists back home: “Never quit your daydream.”

How do you prepare for Eurovision: “It’s very important to be versatile because you have everything from skin fades to updos, to braiding and sewing hair. You’re doing hair that you don’t usually do in the salon. We are a really good team. No solo riders, no egos—everyone is doing the job.”

Viral hair trends in your country: Softer texture and classic updos. Copper colors.

Best part of being on the Moroccanoil® Eurovision team:Honestly, working together as a team. It’s amazing to have a group of people that will support you in anything you need help with.”

Importance of being a versatile stylist: “Diversity is important. Everyone doesn’t come with straight hair, so you should definitely be able to do textured, curly [and] straight hair—every single texture that there is, because everyone needs something, so you want to be able to do it.”

Most used product backstage: Luminous Hairspray and Dry Texture Spray (“You can’t live without it!”)

Viral hairstyling trends in your country: Half-up, half-down with a disheveled ponytail or bun. Sleekness mixed with a little bit of tousled texture.

The best part of being on the Global Styling team: “I can’t explain the excitement. To work with all of the stylists from around the world—it’s magic. [Advice for stylists who are interested:] Be yourself. Don’t try to be a star or diva. Teamwork helps each other. Be open to what the artists say, it’s about them, not us.”

Go-to products for the wet look: Root Boost and Styling Gel Strong

Viral hair trends in your country: Soft waves, natural bend, feminine hairstyling. Chocolate brunette, golden blondes and natural tonal range.

Best advice for stylists who are interested in this opportunity: “The best part of being here is everybody works together collectively. Everybody is like a family, and there’s so much support and guidance. If [stylists] want to experience something like this, you have to be prepared for the unpredictability, how fast-paced everything is and how busy everything can get. It’s really exciting.”

Most used product backstage: Luminous Hairspray Strong Hold (liters of it a day!)

Viral hair trends in your country: Beachy, lived-in blondes for summer.

Best part of being on the Moroccanoil team: “It’s the best experience of my life. It’s so exciting and you can use your creativity unlike behind the chair in the salon. You are doing the styling [and] haircuts for all of the artists before they’re going onstage. It’s so nice to see how the [team] is doing things in different ways, and to learn from other countries, like new fashion trends and styles.”
