The pop princess that needs no introduction graced the VMAs red carpet in a stunning gown and signature Old Hollywood glam curls. Sabrina Carpenter took home a VMAs for her single Espresso, but not before a full performance of her hit songs, a grand entrance on a diamond stool suspended from the ceiling, dance choreography with astronauts and a wild romance with an alien—during all of which her hair stayed perfectly in place for.

So what’s the secret to building a bulletproof style for the world’s biggest pop star? Hairstylist Evanie Frausto (@evaniefrausto) shares the step-by-step process and Redken products used for America’s sweetheart at the VMAs.

Sabrina’s Signature Fringe Was Prepped 6 Hours Before Glam Started…

“For Sabrina’s VMAs look, we started six hours before glam by prepping a medium-sized roller in her bangs to let sit until it was time to get her ready,” says Evanie. This red carpet look drew inspiration from ’80s pop icons and Marilyn Monroe, blending sweet and sultry into one (complete with a Bob Mackie gown previously worn by Madonna!)

HOW-TO STEPS

1

As stated above, prep for Sabrina started six hours before the official glam call time to allow her signature fringe to sit in a roller.

2

Sabrina’s hair was cut to her shoulders for what Evanie describes as a chic and elegant old Hollywood look.

3

To get into the volume for the bombshell styling, Evanie dampens Sabrina’s hair to apply Redken Volume Maximizer from root-to-end to prep for a classic blowout

4

Using a round brush to dry each section, Evanie then secures each secure into a roller to set.

5

Once the blowout is complete, Evanie says, “I sectioned off the top of her hair from the hairline to underneath the crown to begin curling using a one-inch curling iron.”

6

After the top section is complete, he transitioned to using a 3/4 inch curling iron for the remainder of the hair to embrace the shorter texture and give some tightness and bounce to the look.

7

Once the entire head was curled and set with pins, Evanie let the hair completely cool before taking down the curls and gently brushing out the look. “To top off the look, I added Redken Brushable Hairspray to keep it soft and sexy and she was ready for the carpet,” he adds.
