American Fashion was the inspiration for this year’s Met Gala, and the stars were here to bring the culture. For actress, Amandla Sternberg, Celebrity stylist Vernon François (@vernonfrancois) elevated a classic African American hair accessory, the durag, for one of fashion’s biggest red carpets. Typically worn by men to protect their natural hair, Amandla’s braided style elevated beyond just an accessory—complete with a dramatic train.

HOW-TO STEPS

1

Amandla’s hair was prelightened using Redken‘s Flash Lift Bonder Inside and cleansed with the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Shampoo and Conditioner.

2

To prep for styling, Vernon smoothed out Amandla’s natural texture using the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer with the Diffuser and Wide Tooth Comb attachment.

3

He then applied his own Mist Nourishing Water to lock in moisture and the Redken One United All-In-One Multi-Benefit Treatment to protect the hair for heat styling.

Vernon used multiple braiding techniques to style the hair away from the face stopping the braids at the occipital bone. He kept the remaining hair long and sleek to create the image of a durag down her back. He then created smaller three-strand braids that wrapped around the hairline.

To seal the braids, Vernon applied his own Leave In Conditioner followed by Redken’s Triple Pure 32 High Hold Hairspray and Quick Dry 18 Instant Finishing Spray. He then used the Supersonic™ hair dryer with the Diffuser attachment to mold and lock the style into place, shaping each braid into position using his fingers.

5

Using the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener, Vernon shaped the smaller braids around the hairline into place.
