Who is the ideal client for a sun-kissed beige blonde?

Suzi recommends this color for naturally light blonde clients who want to appear bright and soft, while maintaining dimension. “My client wanted to have brighter pieces in her hair, but didn’t want to feel platinum blonde—which is easily done on a natural base Level 8 root,” Suzi explains.

The solution? Don’t use foils through the entire head: “By processing open-air and not allowing the lightener to process inside of a foil, it slows down the development of the color and, therefore, minimizes the lift we achieve—allowing a softer result,” Suzi explains.

Pro Tip: Utilize foils in areas where you want maximum brightness, like the nape and face frame, which allows the overall look to stay soft.

What can clients expect from their appointment?

This five-hour appointment included the lightening technique, root melt, toner, treatment, haircut and a blowout. “The application of the lightener only takes 45 minutes, as it is very scattered and soft. The development would take 50 minutes maximum, depending on the natural base color for this soft finish,” Suzi explains.

How often should sun-kissed blondes visit the salon to stay fresh?

Thankfully, this look doesn’t require frequent salon visits—here’s what Suzi recommends: “I would recommend touching up the lightness between 6 to 12 months to keep that soft finish and to avoid over-brightening the hair. I recommend trims every three months to keep the hair healthy, and a toner at the same time (if needed) to keep the color looking fresh,” Suzi shares.

FORMULA STEPS

1. Before:

2. Create a radial section from ear-to-ear at the crown. Section the top away to begin working at the back of the head.

3. To create a dimensional background for the open-air balayage to pop, apply Formula A in alternating diagonal and horizontal sections through the bottom half of the head. Be sure to leave out pieces of the natural hair to create depth.

4. Once the bottom section is complete, use the crown as a transitional point and switch to only horizontal sections to foil. While still using Formula A, Suzi says, “I took finer slices but kept the weaves nice and wide for the color to pop next to the natural [base], and to avoid the brightness getting lost.”

5. Section off the hairline to avoid overprocessing. Then, on the sides of the head, work upwards starting with a diagonal section and pivoting to a horizontal section at the front partline.

6. To lighten the hairline, divide it evenly into four sections and apply Formula A. Process to your desired lift.

7. Apply Formula B as a root melt and Formula C to the mids and ends to achieve maximum blend. Suzi’s secret to a glossy finish? “Use Moroccanoil® Color Calypso Demi-Permanent toners. They are really glossy and shiny, and help add to that sun-kissed finish,” she explains.

8. Rinse and style with a 32mm curling iron, leaving out the ends. BONUS: To see how Suzi styles effortless, classy waves using a curling iron, click here.
