The client featured had the Global Lightening Retouch technique applied to refresh their platinum haircolor. “The best candidate for platinum is someone who’s never chemically treated their hair before—someone with strong hair in overall healthy condition,” says Melody and Michael.

What at-home care and in-salon maintenance are required for this look?
The biggest thing Melody and Michael stress to their clients once they go platinum is to decrease the amount they shampoo per week. If a client is used to shampooing once a day, they need to switch to every other day to avoid drying out their hair. To combat the feeling of greasiness they recommend clients, “Find a dry shampoo to use in between wash days to keep your tresses looking fresh!” Make sure the products used are sulfate free.
Platinum is the most high maintenance form of blonde, so it’s important that clients understand the commitment required before going to a Level 9/10. “Keeping up your super blonde locks will mean very regular and expensive salon appointments. Be ready to have an appointment in the salon at least every four to five weeks,” they said.

How do you consult with a client who isn’t suited for this service?
Part of the consultation process is letting a client know if a service is possible or not. If the client’s hair isn’t up to the task, here’s how Melody and Michael get them to try something different. “The best way to steer a client away from a service that you know is not right for them is to first explain why. This includes explaining the maintenance required, the risks to the condition of their hair, and why it might not suit them the way they think it will.”
“It is also important to offer a compromise during this conversation. For example, offer a more reasonable shade of blonde that will not damage their hair in an unnecessary way. If a compromise cannot be reached, you might have to be willing to walk away from the task all together. It is better to stand by what you believe in, then settle for something you know is wrong.”
