Reality Check: Let’s Talk Starting Level & Color History
Even the biggest names in the world need a color transformation calendar—feel free to show this to your impatient clients if necessary. “Since she was colored brunette, went red a year ago, back to brunette in between and was highlighted three years ago—I needed to do a double process strand test for an even lift,” Jacob explains.
The strand test was done using Schwarzkopf Professional® BLONDEME® Bond Enforcing Premium Lightener 9+ + 20-volume BLONDEME® Premium Developer.
Flashback: Dove’s deep red hair just one year ago—this color would soon turn back to a Level 3 brunette before going blonde.
Strand Test Results:
- “I was able to see all the banding and how Dove’s hair lifted,” says Jacob.
- Due to the previous color variations, Jacob decided to double process once the preliminary test was rinsed.
- “I explained that the best and worst case was how the rest of the hair would lift,” Jacob says. “Best case is a clean, double process blonde and worst case would be a rooted Level 8 with a blonde balayage.”
Biggest Challenges Moving Forward:
- Multiple previous colors
- Natural color at the roots
- Keeping the hair’s condition strong and healthy
How & Where To Begin This Color Correction
Due to the color variations and complex workarounds needed for the correction, Jacob planned this transformation over multiple days. “Lightener was applied in sections over multiple days,” he begins. “Sections were worked on separately, starting in the back, then the sides and followed by the top and leaving the hairline until last.”
How Long Did This Transformation Take?
“The first round of decolorization took four days, and that was just round one,” Jacob explains. “It took another three days to finish lifting and evening out her hair color.” Once the base was even, the filling process at the roots and the rest of the head could begin.
“In total, it took seven days with 67 hours of work and the help of seven assistants and the support of Hawthorne, the salon I work out of in New York.”
Maintenance: Schedule & Upkeep
Since Dove is a natural Level 8, the maintenance of the blonde transformation will be a walk in the park in relation to the color correction. Jacob says she will need a gloss for her line of demarcation and a hairline highlight, working to leave the rest of her hair untouched and healthy.
