Foiled Cashmere Highlights Isn't One-Size-Fits-All: Here's How To Make It Work For Every Client
Timeless Blondes: Smart Precision Tips For Full-Head Foils
Foiled Cashmere may be one of the most in-demand blonding techniques right now—but it’s not a one-size-fits-all service. The real skill isn’t just executing the technique; it’s knowing how to adapt it.
What is Foiled Cashmere?
Foiled Cashmere is a precise, full-head foiling technique built on a 4×4 placement method to create high-impact, customizable results across different hair types and colors. Inspired by ’90s blonding and rooted in a quiet luxury finish, it delivers maximum brightness at the root with soft, seamless dimension through the ends.
Stylists can take the free online certification from Schwarzkopf Professional® to learn the system and deliver more controlled results and higher-value services.
Below, four color experts from the Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Team share how they customized this technique to work across different hair colors, types and client goals.

When Your Client Needs More Depth Without Losing Dimension
When a client’s color feels too light, flat or one-note, the instinct might be to keep lifting, but that’s not always the answer. In many cases, adding depth back in is what creates a more dimensional, expensive-looking result.
Brendnetta Ashley (@edgybgirl), BTC Team Member, uses Foiled Cashmere to reintroduce richness without sacrificing brightness, focusing on tone placement within each foil to create a softer, more intentional blend.
“One technical discovery I had while adapting the Foiled Cashmere technique was how much tone placement within the foil matters more than just lift…The gradient toning technique creates depth at the nape area while gradually getting brighter towards the front, yet still creating a soft, seamless blend,” she shares.

By strategically adding depth and refining tone, her result feels balanced, blended and elevated. “Balayage gives you freedom, but it doesn’t teach you how to engineer it inside a foil. Foiled Cashmere closes that gap between precision at the root, controlled lift and luxury-level blend.”

When Your Client Has Compromised Hair But Wants To Be Brighter
“My model had extremely compromised hair, and we needed to erase lines of demarcation AND brighten and refine her existing blonde,” says Carly Zanoni (@the.blonde.chronicles). “I was able to incorporate multiple lighteners so that I could lift her hair really safely.” She also uses Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA Vibrance®: “[It’s] my first choice for creating a glossy, shiny finish that makes the hair feel healthier than it did before you colored it.”

This kind of strategic placement is a core focus of Foiled Cashmere certification. “This training really brings you back to the art of traditional foiling (which is truly timeless!) and shows you how to integrate it in a modern way. Even if you love balayage, adding this level of precision gives you so much more control and customization for your clients,” she says.

When Your Client Wants Soft, Seamless Brightness At The Root
Ashlee Norman (@ashleenormanhair) combines Foiled Cashmere with AirTouch to create brightness at the root without a harsh line of demarcation. “AirTouch didn’t exist in the ’90s, so it’s a perfect example of how trends come back but evolve with new technology. By using controlled air pressure to blow out the shorter internal hairs, I’m able to isolate the longest strands—the ones that have naturally seen the most summers—and highlight those.”

Even as a seasoned stylist, Ashlee stresses the importance of revisiting foundational skills: “The Foiled Cashmere certification really highlights the power of sectioning, foil control and placement—skills that balayage alone doesn’t always develop,” she says. “In the class you pick up little nuggets that can completely change your efficiency, like using wider foils to cover larger sections or pivoting your placements diagonally to horizontal to move around the head faster.”

When Your Client Needs A Softer Transition From Root To Ends
Josie Vilay (@josievilay) uses a strategic base bump to control brightness through the mids and ends on her client with a darker base. “I used IGORA® COLOR10 [and] IGORA ROYAL® to softly lift and warm the roots…which created the perfect canvas for the Foiled Cashmere effect. That combination gave me that expensive, dimensional softness instead of a high contrast between her natural and highlights,” Josie shares.
“The biggest difference is intention. In the ’90s, chunking was bold but often uniform and disconnected. Now, with Foiled Cashmere, every foil is placed with purpose—there’s softness in the spacing, diffusion at the root, and refinement through the mids.”

“Balayage is beautiful, but it doesn’t teach you the same level of placement discipline that Foiled Cashmere does. The #1 skill gap it fills is [the] intentional 4×4 foiling method: understanding exactly where brightness should live, how it moves and how it interacts with depth,” she says. “This technique teaches you how to create dimension that lasts beyond the first wash and grows out seamlessly, which is a whole different level of mastery.”
