Debunking 4 Myths About Client Haircare

Picture this: You just nailed your client’s hair color, but they leave your chair without retail and you know they’re headed to the drugstore. We’ve all been there. At-home care products are your client’s hair insurance to maintain the look you’ve spent hours creating behind the chair.

This is your opportunity to educate and sell. We gathered common myths and realities to help clients understand what they need and what they don’t—plus, a benefit cheat sheet they can screenshot!

1. Myth: Sulfate-Free Shampoo Does Not Lather

Clients love the squeaky-clean feeling they get from cleansing which is why they stay away from sulfate-free shampoo—they miss the lather! But guess what? This is a total myth—it DOES lather.

Clients can still get the clean feeling they desire from a sulfate-free shampoo without abrasive sulfates, parabens or sodium chloride, like Biotop Professional’s 911 Quinoa Shampoo. It’s also pH-balanced, color safe and packed full of nine essential amino acids—and yes, it lathers.

“This product has been one of my favorites for virgin hair because it is lightweight and doesn’t weigh the hair down,” says NYC-based stylist, @catherinexlara. “And for processed hair because it [hydrates] the hair while keeping it healthy,” she adds.

2. Myth: Conditioner: The Longer, The Better!

Dear clients… Your stylist needs you to know: Letting conditioner sit longer than the manufacturer’s instructions does not mean your hair is retaining more benefits. In fact, if a conditioner sits too long, there may be a buildup of protein. Too much protein can lead to breakage later!

3. Reality: Key Benefits To Look For In A Hair Mask

With all the different options out there, picking a hair mask can be overwhelming for clients; but, we’re here to help! Here’s a cheat sheet of key benefits they should be looking for.

  • Hydrate
  • Repair
  • Add shine
  • Provide UV Protection
  • Feature a short activation time
  • Be color-safe (if the client has color-treated hair)

“I use a hair mask every wash due to my dry hair,” says @rubystylistchicago. She advises clients with more fine hair to use the mask every three washes.

4. Reality: Quinoa In Haircare—Wait, What?!

Chances are you’ve eaten superfoods to power your body from the inside out; but, did you know the same nutritional powerhouses can be used to fuel your hair and scalp?

That’s right: Quinoa is the only plant-based superfood that contains the same nine essential amino acids naturally found within our hair. This means our hair is more easily able to recognize, absorb and use the quinoa protein to strengthen cuticle bonds and fill damaged holes with reconstructing proteins—meanwhile, fortifying the hair to help prevent breakage.

That’s the No.1 reason why stylists reach for the 911 line from Biotop Professional. Every product is infused with quinoa to deliver results that penetrate beyond the surface, building strength long-term.
