1. Add A Treatment To Your Toner Formula To Save Time
Here’s a little secret: Olaplex doesn’t just have to be added to lightener formulas. Mykey actually prefers to add Olaplex No. 1 and No. 2 to his creative color formulas as well. “This way, if you are busy the client doesn’t mind sitting a little longer because they are also receiving a treatment,” he explains.
Tell your client that while her color processes, it’s also:
- Reconstructs the hair bonds and helps repair damage.
- Seals the cuticle of the hair, which helps retain color.
- Creates a creamier consistency for formulas, perfect for color melting.

For this look Mykey used semi-permanent color from Manic Panic in the shades: Atomic Turquoise, Electric Lizard, Electric Banana, Psychadellic Sunset, Hot Hot Pink and Ultra Violet!

2. Two Tricks For Avoiding Patchy Color
Avoid patches and holes in rainbow color melts by using these two tricks from Mykey:
- Apply color to the underside of the section FIRST. This ensures the section is fully saturated with color.
- Melt each shade together to avoid blonde lines. Mykey suggests choosing colors that are complementary to each other so shades can melt together without turning muddy.
Pro Tip: Mixing Olaplex into a color formula also creates a creamier consistency, making it easier to color melt.
3. Switch Up The Root Shade To Create Movement
To give his rainbow prisms movement, Mykey changes the root shade every inch. “By changing the shade every inch I can create the illusion that the color is moving up the hair. Also, having my sections on a slight angle helps create a seamless blend when the color falls all together at the end,” Mykey explains.
