3 Tips To Create A Twisted, Snatched Updo
Festival Season Is Here: How To Snatch A Twisted Updo
Summer is coming, which means it’s time to prepare for clients’ styling requests: Baby braids, twisted buns and slicked-back ponies. So, we called in our industry bestie and RUSK Global Creative Director Matt Swinney (@matt.swinney) to show us how he creates a snatched, twisted updo that lasts. Keep reading to get Matt’s must-have products, styling secrets and more.

1. The Perfect Prep: Matt’s Go-To Products
“To prep Hailey’s hair, we used a little bit of RUSK Smoothing Control mixed in with a little bit of RUSK Volumizing Mousse,” Matt explains. Here’s why:
- Smoothing Control: Controls frizz for up to 72 hours and protects from outside elements
- Volumizing Mousse: Adds medium, workable hold without the crunchy feel
Next, Matt used a 1 ½ inch curling iron to add body and texture to the hair. He finished prep by applying RUSK Dry Texture Spray to the roots to add grit since his client’s hair was freshly washed. Start the style by sectioning off the fringe:

2. THIS Is The Key to Snatching a Ponytail…
Matt sets the ponytail—here’s the trick. Follow the line of the cheekbone when brushing the hair back to create that perfect, snatched look.
3. Try THIS Instead of an Elastic
Instead of using an elastic rubber band, try an elastic cord to tie the ponytail in place. This technique will secure the style without creating knots in the hair.
Here’s how: Wrap the elastic cord around the hair, creating an “X” with the two ends of the cord; then, loop one end through the hole of the “X” twice. Sinch the cord to secure it.
