Curly Hair Expert Shares Genius Tips For Coloring Curls & Waves

There’s a lot of misconceptions out there when it comes to working with curly hair, and we bet you’ve had a client ask, “Is coloring bad for curly hair?” Here’s her answer: Not when done properly! So below, we’re tackling how to properly color curly hair with the help of curl expert Evan Joseph (@evanjosephcurls)! Keep reading to grab three tips that break down highlight placement, the best way to process and toning.

Products Used

1. Where To Place Highlights

Curly hair and natural texture have a lot going on—in the best way possible—so don’t let yourself get lost in all that movement and volume. When hand-painting highlights, Evan keeps his placement simple: Choose the curls you want to pop and just paint them as you want to see them.

Note: The goal when coloring curly hair is to create a cohesive look that isn’t too harsh on the eyes. Because curly hair types have so much movement, Evan prefers natural-looking techniques like ombré, balayage and highlights over fashion colors.

2. Opt For Open Air Processing

Lightening the hair is already a harsh process as it is, but when you use foils to speed up the processing time, you risk over-processing. Over-processed curls means damage and damaged curls lose their ability to spiral. So to avoid disrupting her curl pattern, Evan recommends processing in open air.  “Curly hair has a tendency to be really fine, and when you put curly hair inside a foil packet it just lifts too quickly,” he notes.

3. Tone With Permanent Haircolor

We know what you’re thinking but stay with us here! Because curly hair tends to be more fragile than other hair types, Evan’s go-to is Schwarzkopf Professional tbh – true beautiful honest. Not only is it a permanent color that mimics the look of natural haircolor BUT it can be transformed into toning services by using the tbh Tone Softener, which is what Evan does to essentially dilute the color into a demi.
