Want to get your low-maintenance clients back in your chair more often while still giving her a dimensional, lived-in look that fits her lifestyle? Then check out this rooty sandy blonde balayage from BTC Team Member Jenn Malone (@jmalonehair). She says this look can last months and can be maintained with simple glossing appointments between lightening sessions. But know this:

“The most important aspect in achieving this look is not cutting corners,” advises Jenn. “Take your time, adjust your developer if needed and watch your foils to make sure they’ve lifted to the desired shade before pulling them.”

COLOR FORMULAS

  • Formula A:

Joico Blonde Life Lightening Powder + 20-volume developer

  • Formula B:

Joico Free Play Clay Lightener + 30-volume developer

  • Formula C:

    Joico LumiShine Demi Liquid 5NA + 4NWB + 5-volume developer

  • Formula D:

    LumiShine Demi Liquid 9NA + 5-volume developer

FORMULA STEPS

1. Starting in the front, take out about a ¾-inch hairline section and paint back-to-back babylights with Formula A. Place each one in foil to process. “I always start in the front because this is where I want it the brightest,” shares Jenn. “Most times I pull these foils before I’m done applying everything else.”

2. Move to the nape and continue applying Formula A on paper-thin slices. Work up the entire head and place each slice in foil to let process.

Pro Tip: Jenn slices instead of weaves because coverage is the main focus in this area.

3. For the remaining hair that is not in a foil, balayage with Formula B and process in open air. Be sure to watch the hair carefully and pull any foils that have processed to the desired shade.

4. Shampoo only, then apply Formula C in the back from the scalp to about 2½ inches down, smudging the root as you go along. Work your way up and then toward the front, leaving the face-frame out until the very end. Process for about 8 minutes.

Note: Jenn will consistently “rake” through the hair with the Y.S. Park #452 Round Tooth Cutting Comb to soften the overall finish—just be sure you don’t drag the color through the ends.

5. Rinse, then apply Formula D all over and process for 8 to 10 minutes. Then, rinse again and condition the hair.

6. For the style, prep with Joico K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock, blow-dry and create loose waves. Then, finish with Joico Beach Shake.
