With what seems like EVERYONE switching to the dark side, the “expensive brunette” trend is on the rise and tbh, we love it. This luxe and rich brunette by @sammiiestyles is not only full of rich tones but manages to reflect light and maintain dimension, two key elements to making a brunette look “expensive.” Scroll through for her tips and tricks to achieving this highly requested trend.

1. Who is the ideal client for this look?

“This technique is for someone wanting a very lived in, yet bold look. It’s ideal for a guest who wants to see some dimension, but still feel like themselves. With brunettes, they want depth but they still want to see their natural hair color, too,” says Sammie.

2. How long does this technique take and what does pricing look like?

“This look all together takes about three to four hours depending on your client’s goals and density of hair. With this technique, and any lived-in look, I have found that with the amount of time, precision, and amount of product it takes, charging hourly is the best way to price this service,” explains Sammie.

3. What maintenance is required for this look?

As with any color service, at home care is critical to its longevity. “I always have my guests go home with sulfate-free shampoo, conditioner and heat protectant products that will allow their color to last up to 8 weeks. The in-salon maintenance would be every eight weeks for either a gloss or color melt depending on your guests goals and bringing the face framing highlights up every 16 weeks,” recommends Sammie.

FORMULA STEPS

1. Using Formula A and a teasylight technique, follow the client’s natural hairline and foil.

2. Using Formula B and a teasylight technique, foil the mohawk section, starting with a 25% tease towards the hairline and ending with a 75% tease in the crown.

3. Apply Formula C at the root all over, melting into Formula D on the mid lengths, and into Formula E on the ends. Process for 15 minutes.

4. Apply Formula F to her face-framing money piece. Process for five minutes.

Pro Tip: “Applying the face-frame formula last allows for a brighter result towards the front, mimicking the effects of natural sunlight,” explains Sammie.
