Bronding Basics: Textured Hair Foiling Tips To Save

1. Leave Room In Your Foils When You Fold Them

When foiling textured hair, Kendra always ensures to leave extra room to account for swelling—here’s why:

“I know that my chemical has water in the formula and with textured/natural hair, water will make it swell. So remember, when you’re foiling, to leave a little bit of space in your foils because you want to give the hair room to process with the lightener,” Kendra explains.

2. Don’t Make This Blending Mistake On Your Tease

To create blend insurance, Kendra will tease each section she foils. Then, she gently feathers the lightener on her brush into the teased portion of the section. Be sure to leave a large amount of the tease at the root untouched to maintain natural depth.

“You definitely don’t want to cover all of your tease in this area and go directly towards the scalp,” Kendra explains. “Teasing is my cushion and I don’t want to destroy my cushion.”

3. The RIGHT Products Are Your Key To Achieve Full Saturation

To avoid splotchy lift or uneven application, Kendra always ensures full saturation of her sections to achieve maximum lift. To easily do so, she opts for a creme lightener with a 1:15 lightener-to-developer ratio:

“My ratio is 1:15 or 1:25. I like my consistency a little thicker, and I feel like whenever I do that, I am able to have the hair stick to the foils a little easier. We know that most textured hair is going to swell at some point, so I want to make sure I can get heavy saturation and have the hair stick to the foil as quickly as possible,” Kendra shares. “I love the consistency of Kenra Professional Simply Blonde Lightener—it’s very velvety.”
