How to Create Luxury Blondes in One Appointment
3 Tips to Take an Average Blonding Refresh to a Luxury Service
Creating expensive-looking, luxurious blondes involves a custom combination of weave size, foil placement and the perfect root melt with a custom gloss. In this “Luxury Blondes” course breakdown from BTC University and Moroccanoil®, blonding expert Suzi Angelina (@hair.by.suzi) shares her favorite techniques for taking any client from classic blonde to luxury hair color in just one session.
FYI—Hey international fam! Please note within these tips, mentions of Moroccanoil Color Calypso Demi-Permanent Gloss and Gloss Activator are known as Color Calypso Demi-Permanent Cream and Oxidative Cream Developer outside of North America.
1. Understanding When Fine Vs. Chunky Weaves Make An Impact
Suzi highlights the importance of choosing the right weave size when working within natural Levels 4 to 5.
Fine weaves for brightness: Use fine weaves when you want to create a better lift and a more blended appearance. However, Suzi cautions against making the weaves too fine; if they are too small, those pieces may get lost, resulting in a dull finish.
Chunky weaves for depth: Use chunky weaves when you want to create more dimension, but aren’t looking to achieve a high lift. This type of weave will help you cover more ground in fewer foils, but won’t give you the same level of lift that fine, evenly saturated weaves will.
Moroccanoil’s Blonde Voyage Powder Lightener is Suzi’s go-to lightener for luxury blondes because it offers a beautiful amount of lift and does not weigh the foils down, causing them to slip and create bleed marks.

2. Why Foil Control Ensures A Clean, Bright Lift
Use these three fundamental foiling techniques and master them. When books are packed and time runs short, remind yourself why the fundamentals matter for a luxury-looking service.
- Control the width of your sections. Begin with clean, precise sections to ensure even product application. The width of your sections should match the width of your foil to maintain tension and saturation for consistent lifts.
- Lay your foils flat. Instead of folding your foils, lay them flat, one on top of the other. This ensures complete saturation and prevents the hair from drying out in folded areas, which is especially crucial for clean lifts on clients with darker hair.
- Seal for heat. While the amount of lift you get is determined by the lightener and saturation you use, also consider the heat generated by your client’s scalp. Fold the edges of the foil to create a seal, trapping the natural heat to enhance the lifting process.

3. Think Warmth is the Enemy? It’s Actually the Secret
Suzi’s glossing formulation helps to create a softer grow-out and achieve that sought-after luxurious color clients are requesting. “This is what takes the technique from average to expensive,” she explains.
Her #1 tip is don’t be afraid of warmth. Warmer tones reflect the light more, making them appear brighter, so the key to creating an expensive glow is formulating for controlled warmth.
Glossing with an ash gold toner helps neutralize the natural undertones while adding some warmth back into the hair for a vibrant, expensive-looking blonde.
Bonus tip: When Suzi glosses her client’s money piece, she adds more gold into her formula to create a brighter face frame that pops against the rest of the hair.
Suzi loves Moroccanoil’s Color Calypso Demi-Permanent Gloss to create her seamless and expensive-looking blends. This gloss gives a natural-looking glow and leaves the hair shiny and soft.
