How-To: Balayaged Rays of Light

close formula

This gorgeous shadow root is courtesy of Kim Bruce (@themisfitblonde), co-owner of Monroe on Mane in Sturbridge, Mass. Kim has been a hairdresser for almost 17 years and specializes in blondes, and she gave us the deets on this transformation.

“I’ve been doing this client’s hair since September [about six months],” Kim says. “She came to me with very over-processed blonde hair. Our first two sessions were making her strawberry blonde, and our third session, we did a color melt using a demi-permanent ash/neutral color. Today when she came in, she was ready to brighten her hair up!”

Before

Oligo Professional Color Formula
Formula A: Blacklight Balayage Clay Lightener + Blacklight Cool Toned Blonde + Blacklight Extra Blonde + 40-volume developer

Application
1.
Balayage with Formula A and process at room temperature for 30 minutes. Kim picked up this formula from @lisalovesbalayage. “It has the consistency of a clay lightener, but with a little more lifting power like a traditional lightener,” she says.

2. Apply Uberliss Bond Amplifier for 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse.

3. Shampoo with Oligo Blacklight Blue Shampoo to tone.

4. Kim gave her client a fresh trim and styled with AG Hair Care  Fast Food Leave-On Conditioner and CHI Silk Infusion Silk Reconstructing Complex. She blow-dried with the Bio Ionic 10X Ultralight Speed Dryer and an Olivia Garden round brush, then used two Babyliss curling irons: a 1-inch and a 1 ¼-inch.

Total Price: $145
