Conditioner Before Toner: Common Hair Myth Debunked
Should You Shampoo & Condition Before Toning? Here Are 3 Reasons Why
Traditionally, we’re taught to skip conditioner before toning to avoid “closing” the cuticle; but, that’s not always true. Scroll on to learn how to avoid splotchy toner by creating an even canvas by conditioning before toning.
1. “Don’t Condition Before Toning” Debunked
The common worry about applying conditioner before toning comes from the assumption that the hair’s cuticle will close, blocking the toner from depositing properly.
“The cuticle takes much more time to close than that,” Carly explains. That being said, conditioner will not act as a color barrier; but, as an equalizer to even out the hair’s porosity and allow for a more even deposit of color.
2. Multi-Use Ways Conditioner Can Help Your Appointment
Now that we know conditioning before toning is a go, you should be utilizing this trick to comb out teasing at the bowl. BTC Team Member and Schwarzkopf Professional® Digital Artistic Team Member Carly Zanoni (@the.blonde.chronicles) shampoos and conditions the hair before she tones—here’s why:
“Brushing through hair that has not been conditioned can be stressful and painful for the client,” Carly explains. “I do a lot of teasing and need conditioner to help me brush [it] out,” she adds. Don’t be afraid to try this step—making your client’s experience comfortable should never be compromised for the sake of saving time.

3. How To Seal In Color Without Conditioner
Since we already conditioned, once the toner is processed utilize this time in the bowl to apply a mask. Applying a mask after color as opposed to before color, then conditioner, will help to not overload the hair with product.
For clients who have damaged hair or need a boost of moisture after lightening, BTC Team Member and 2021 #ONESHOT Hair Awards Winner Caitlin Dugan (@coloredbycaitlin) uses Schwarzkopf Professional® FIBRE CLINIX®. To target inner and outer hair damage, Caitlin mixes FIBRE CLINIX® Tribond Treatment with the Hydrate Booster—here’s why:
“This treatment reconstructs the hair surface by connecting the bonds and restoring health and vibrancy,” Caitlin explains. “It works in only 10 minutes, [making it] a quick, super beneficial add-on to your service. It makes the hair so much more manageable for styling, too,” she adds.
Pro Tip: “I love to mix at least five pumps with equal parts (or more) of the hydrate booster,” Caitlin explains.
