2. What to Know About Maria Nila’s Background & B-Corp Certification:

Maria Nila is a family-owned, B-Corp Certified business established in 1999 in Sweden. The now global brand also manufactures many of its own products in-house in their factory in the south of Sweden. The custom-built factory’s roof is covered in solar panels, producing energy that can run 60 households, a water recycling system for the production’s water supply, and circular air condensation equipment.  By controlling and monitoring the development process, Maria Nila is able to ensure quality and sustainability and lead them to becoming a B-Corp Certified company.

Do you know what a B-Corp Certification is? Here are the details:

B Lab Global awards B-Corp Certifications to those companies who demonstrate high social and environmental performance. The companies who apply for the certification must achieve a B Impact Assessment score of 80 or above to receive a certification—Maria Nila scored 114.3 points. Here’s how B Lab measures each applicant’s performance:

  • Each application must meet high standards of verified performance, accountability and transparency on factors from employee benefits and charitable giving, to supply chain practices and input materials.
  • Each company must make a legal commitment to their corporate governance structure to achieve benefit corporation status if available in their jurisdiction.

  • Each company must exhibit transparency by allowing information about their performance measured against B Lab’s standards to be publicly available on their B Corp profile on B Lab’s website.

Only about 8,300 companies across all industries are B-Corp Certified globally as the certification process is rigorous and expensive, yet shows the company’s true commitment to sustainability.
