Watch: 5 Gray Coverage Quickies

Gray coverage in just 10 minutes? It CAN be done, and we’re showing you how with five quickie videos we pulled from Instagram! Keep scrolling to learn how to approach gray coverage and banding at the same time, a small amount of silver, LOTS of grays, a gray coverage shadow root AND an all-over gray transformation.

1. Gray Coverage + Banding

Have a client with the double whammy that is gray grow out and banding? No worries! Sarmad Najem (@hairbysarmad) tackles both at the same time using Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA® COLOR10, a permanent hair color that processes in only 10 minutes.

2. Just a Sprinkle of Silver

Say goodbye to letting a few silvery strands process for 30 to 45 minutes! To achieve a seamless blend in less time, Jessica Scott Santo (@jessicascotthair) applied IGORA® COLOR10 3-0 + 6-0 + IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 6% (20-volume) throughout the root area. She then finished with an all-over glaze of Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA VIBRANCE® 5-65 + IGORA VIBRANCE® 1.9% (6-volume) Activator Gel for a rich, high-shine result.

3. Covering LOTS of Gray

If a client with a lot of gray regrowth wants something more cool-toned, Shawna Russell (@hairbyshawna_russell) says she always follows up by asking if they want a cool base or every single hair covered. Why? “If they want 100 percent gray coverage, they need to be OK with some warmth then, because we all know naturals cover the best but on-scalp will produce warm results.”

Note: Because this client wanted full coverage and something more ashy, Shawna used IGORA® COLOR10 35g 5-12 + 10g 7-1 + 10g 6-0 + IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 6% (20-volume). For clients who are OK with some warmth and a little less gray coverage, use more natural in your formula.

4. Gray Coverage as a Shadow Root

Another way to quickly cover a lot of gray? Cherina Capri (@beyondveneer) created the perfect pair that is a shadow root with sun-kissed highlights on the client below using IGORA® COLOR10. In addition to its fast processing time, it also offers up to 100 percent white hair coverage—a MUST for most gray coverage clients.

5. Transition to All-Over Gray

More and more clients are trading in gray coverage for an all-over gray transformation, but it’s not an easy process.

Here’s what Shawna did in the below video:

  1. Take thin slices and foil the dark hair only with Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME® Bond Enforcing Premium Clay Lightener 7+ + BLONDME® Premium Oil Developer 6% (20-volume). Do not touch the virgin hair!
  2. Process until she reaches a Level 9 (this client only lifted to a Level 7 on the ends), then shampoo and tone with IGORA® COLOR10 7-12 + IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 3% (10-volume) to create a charcoal gray hue. “It went a bit dark on the ends because of porosity so I clarified it off a bit,” shares Shawna.
  3. Continuing to leave the virgin hair alone, paint fine highlights with Schwarzkopf Professional IGORA® VARIO BLOND PLUS POWDER LIGHTENER + IGORA ROYAL® Oil Developer 3% (10-volume) to break up the solid charcoal gray color.
  4. Next, apply Schwarzkopf Professional FIBREPLEX No 1 Bond Booster as a standalone treatment and rinse.
  5. Finish by toning all over with IGORA VIBRANCE® 8-11 + 9-1 + IGORA VIBRANCE® 1.9% (6-volume) Activator Gel.
