1. Dry Cutting Is Key

What’s great about dry cutting is that you can customize it, when it’s wet you can’t see the hair as well,” says Anh. This helps you identify the true texture of the clients hair, including all of the previous layers, whorls and cowlicks, and makes it easier to style.

2. Stick To One Cutting Technique

Make sure you use the same cutting technique around the perimeter of the head to help keep the shape you’re creating uniform. Don’t start point cutting one section and switch to a blunt cut technique for another, it will throw off the flow of the lob.

3. Blend Out Old Layers

When working with a client’s previous layers or ledge cut, elevate hair out at a 90-degree angle and use a parallel point cutting technique about 2 inches into the hair to softly blend the hair into the cut.

4. Do Not Over Layer The Cut

“Sometimes the most simplistic haircuts are the best because they’re so versatile that you can style it so differently. If you over layer it, it’s hard to blow dry and style,” says Ahn. This tip is especially important for clients with fine hair.
