How-To: Bobby Pin Texture

Quick—name the three hottest trends in women’s styling right now. If you said faux-hawks, braids and lots and lots of texture, you got it right. That’s why this look from Emmanuel Ramirez is so on the money.

Emmanuel created the style for Kut Haus Salon’s annual fashion show, so the end goal was to create something high-fashion and statement-making. The look, which took Emmanuel about four hours from start to finish, incorporates volume, texture and even braided hair pieces in the back to add the ultimate “wow” factor. So Emmanuel? If drama was your objective, we’d say mission accomplished.

Here’s how you can create the on-trend look in your salon!

Wrap each section of hair onto a hair pin in a figure 8 pattern. Once the whole section of hair is wrapped, secure with a bobby pin by placing it down the middle of the hair and pin.

Repeat step 3 on every section of hair. Move your way up and to the sides of the head until you complete the whole head.

Once the whole head is wrapped, go back to the first section you started. Flat iron every wrapped section to lock in the shape. Allow 15 to 20 minutes for the sections to cool down.

Starting at the nape, remove the bobby pins and begin to unwrap one section at a time. Work your way up until you have removed all pins.

    7

Brush each section out using a bristle brush. This will start to create the desired texture and volume.

For this style, Emmanuel added some pre-braided extensions to the back to give it a bolder, statement-making look.

Pin the Afro to the side, and create a fan design using large bobby pins. Finish by lightly teasing to secure the height and volume. Spray R+Co VICIOUS Strong Hold Flexible HairSpray to lock in the look.
