GET THE HOW-TO
Show Steps
Create a temple-to-temple section behind the hairline. Then carve two, deep zigzag partings in the back of the head. Create a V-shaped section in the fringe.
Show Steps
Zigzag sections facilitate precise placement and help deliver a natural, softer end result.
Show Steps
At the temple, isolate a face-frame section. Hold the hair with tension, and lightly sweep Formula A onto the section, feathering away from the roots.
Show Steps
Proceed to the next section and repeat the process. Make sure Formula A kisses the ends of the hair. Use a Joico Paint Board and Angled Paint Brush for support and precise placement.
Show Steps
Work around the head in this manner, omitting sections of hair to create dimension.
Show Steps
When the lower section is complete, create another zigzag section about 2 inches above the last one. Work your way around the head, taking sections from just left or right of each previous section and painting with Formula A. This creates a bricklay effect.
Show Steps
Work up to the top of the head in this manner.
Show Steps
Release the top section and create a center part. Analyze how much hair you have and subdivide accordingly.
Show Steps
Apply small babylight highlights scalp to ends using Formula A to create maximum illumination. Choose sections that will produce a sun-kissed effect.
Show Steps
Beginning on the side of the fringe, just above the corner of the eyebrow, isolate small vertical sections and apply Formula A. Release another horizontal fringe section and repeat.
tip: For more dimension, leave a fine, under-layer of the hairline un-highlighted.
Show Steps
Process at room temperature until the desired level of lift is achieved. Rinse and shampoo with K-PAK Color Therapy. Apply Formula B to all strands, and process at room temperature for 20 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and shampoo with Color Balance Blue, followed by K-PAK Color Therapy Luster Lock. Process for 2 to 5 minutes.
Balayage de Rio
Sun-kissed balayage will never go out of style, and Joico Celebrity Colorist Denis de Souza has perfected the technique on cool girls like Mila Kunis, Rachel Bilson and Olivia Wilde. This version is inspired by Rio’s beach-bronzed beauties and completely transforms a Level 4 base!
