We are HERE for a red carpet transformation, so when Hollywood’s golden girl Charlize Theron debuted this luxe rich brunette bob at the 2019 Academy Awards, we had to share it with the BTC fam. Inspired by the 1970s, Adir Abergel (@hairbyadir) pulled references from two iconic films—Michelle Pfeiffer’s sleek and beveled bob in “Scarface” and Julie Christie’s iconic asymmetrical bob in “Shampoo”—to create this blunt, side swept and tucked look. Get the entire breakdown below!

Inspiration: “When I saw the beautiful light Japanese indigo fabric on her Dior dress, I immediately knew I wanted to create a dramatic contrast with her hair. I envisioned taking her hair to a luxe and rich shade of brown that would enhance those gorgeous blue eyes. I wanted a sexy side swept bob that was luxurious, timeless and chic.”

Going Brunette: “My vision for the entire look was for it to feel really luxe: healthy, glowing hair with rich color styled into amazing sexy bob. Charlize is an incredible creative artist who is fearless and willing to experiment. When I presented her the concept to go brunette for the Oscars, she totally trusted me. I think what’s really beautiful is that hair is one of your greatest accessories and changing your hair color is an amazing way to play with your look.”

Products Used

Start by prepping with Virtue®️ Restorative Treatment Mask to infuse the hair with hydration and shine. Add Virtue®️ ColorKick™—the first-ever hair filler made from 100% pure, human keratin—to the mask to boost the fresh brunette color while maintaining its health.

Towel-dry the hair and apply Virtue®️ Volumizing Primer at the roots to create memory and volume, priming the hair for a sleek blowout finish.

Then, create a deep side part and apply Virtue®️ Polish Un-Frizz Cream and smooth throughout from roots to ends.

Blow-dry using a ghd Air®️ Hairdryer and a round brush to create bounce and movement.

Then, use a ghd Platinum+ Styler to create an overall shiny finish, the right amount of movement and to accentuate the haircut. Adir used the Platinum+ Styler on Charlize’s fresh color because it provides color integrity, shine and less breakage.
