How To Remove Excess Hard Water Buildup

Around 85 percent of American homes* have hard water, so it’s likely that your clients are coming in with heavy, weighed-down hair with hidden mineral buildup—which can turn the results of your color services traumatic. Have no fear! We’re here to tell you how to treat hard water buildup, the steps to bring brightness back to your blondes and pro tips you can’t get anywhere else.

1. Why Hard Water Buildup Can Cause Breakage

Removing hard water buildup is especially important for blonde clients: “If left untreated, you run the risk of lightener having a devastating effect,” BTC Team Member Taylor Dellatorre (@taylordidmyhair) warns (THINK: Breakage!). To keep blondes healthy and protected during lightening, Taylor uses a deep cleansing treatment. Her favorite? Urban Alchemy’s Signature Cleanse to remove hard water mineral buildup.

Keep reading to learn Taylor’s buildup cleansing process!

Step 1: Add three spoonfuls of Signature Cleanse and 60 ml of warm water to an applicator bottle.

How Often Should You Deep Cleanse?

According to BTC Team Member and educator Sarah Cabral (@sarahzstylz), “I would suggest at least four times a year (seasonally) to have an in-salon treatment using the Urban Alchemy Signature Cleanse.”

2. For blondes with buildup, do THIS…

“Blonde hair shows environmental buildup and can become brassy between appointments,” explains BTC Team Member and educator Adina Pignatare (@adina_pignatare). When the client’s hair has tipped-out ends or can’t handle a bleach wash, she reaches for Urban Alchemy’s Salt Scrub Cleansing Shampoo. Here’s why she loves it:

Unlike most scrubs that are designed to cleanse only the scalp, this scrub is an an all-over cleanser and according to Adina, it’s, “a great, gentle way to bring life back to blondes.”

Pro Tip: “Spilt the hair in half, [so] that way you don’t overuse product during the scrubbing,” Adina advises.

3. Create custom haircare for each client—wait, what?!

Instead of using the same regimen for every client, try prescribing a custom hair mask, shampoo or conditioner. BTC Team Member Tahirah Carter (@mrs_tahirah2) loves to create a custom routine for clients using Urban Alchemy’s Prescription Care System. Why? “You can cover different hair needs with only one range,” she explains.

For clients who undergo a deep cleansing treatment followed by a blonding service, Tahirah combines the Color Lock, Moisture and Repair alchemies to the Conditioner Base to provide a handful of benefits like split end repair and elasticity strengthening.

Pro Tip: You can sell a TON of retail with prescription haircare—imagine if all your clients had individual systems to take home…
