Pinwheel Chignon and Rising Sun Color
BTC Brand Ambassadors and Instagram stars Jenny Strebe and Jay Wesley Olson are spinning around in circles. For this look, Jay starts us off with his Rising Sun technique—rays of light emanating from a circular center section—to produce a fusion of celestial blue and pearly pink in a pale base. Then Jenny gives it a whirl—spinning braided subsections into a pinwheel chignon, framed with deep waves. The result is a daybreak colored upstyle—cloudy and soft with a good chance of romance. See how it’s done!
HOW-TO STEPS

1
Schwarzkopf Professional Color Formulas
Formula A (Base): IGORA ROYAL 3 parts 8-11 + 1 part 6-12 + 10-volume developer
Formula B: BlondeMe Toning Creme Steel Blue
Formula C: IGORA ROYAL equal parts 9.5-18 + 9.5-1 + 10-volume developer -
2
Begin work on prelightened hair.
-
3
Create a circular section at the nape. Divide the rest of the hair into three panels—sides and top as shown.
-
4
Apply Formula A to the circular nape section, smudging the formula into the hair with your thumb and forefinger.
-
5
Complete section.
-
6
Release a “sunbeam” subsection adjacent to the previous. Apply Formula A to the root area.
-
7
Work Formula B into the midlengths and ends, using the smudging technique. Create another subsection and apply Formula A at the base and Formula C through the midlengths and ends.
-
8
Work throughout each section in this manner, applying Formula A at the base and alternating Formulas B and C on the midlengths and ends of each “sunbeam.”
-
9
Complete the application. Process, rinse, shampoo and condition the hair.

-
11
Apply mousse or texturizing spray to damp hair and blow-dry with a round brush. Isolate a triangular section that extends from the back of each ear to the crest of the nape and secure.
-
12
Divide the hair from ear to ear across the top of the head and secure a second ponytail above the first.
-
13
Braid the top ponytail and secure with elastic at the end.
-
14
Pancake the braid for a thicker shape.
-
15
Wind the braid around the elastic and secure with pins.
-
16
Subdivide the front section and wind each subsection away from the face around a 1-inch curling iron.
-
17
Gently brush through the curls and create an s-formation in the waves at the points where the hair dips. Set the waves with duck bill clips.
-
18
Twist the lengths of the curled sections on each side, drape them into the bun and secure with pins.
-
19
Braid the bottom ponytail and pancake the braid.
-
20
Begin winding the braid around the outside of the existing braided bun; then secure the ends into the bun with a pin. Mist with firm-hold hairspray.
