How-To: Perfectly Undone Ponytail

close formula

Ponytails are making their comeback—we’ve seen them on the runways at Fashion Week and now celebs are making them cool on the red carpet. For Ciara’s American Music Awards look, MIZANI Global Artistic Director César DeLeön Ramirêz wanted to do something that would complement her dress. “I generally like to keep things simple so that they don’t compete. My vision for Ciara was a long messy ponytail with a ’70s inspired fringe,” he said. And here’s how he created it.

César used the MIZANI ThermaSmooth System to blow out Ciara’s hair and then smoothed with his ghd blow dryer.

  • 2

He then created a center part for her fringe area and sectioned out the hair around her face.

  • 3

For the ponytail, he sectioned her head into a front and back section. Then, using his ghd paddle brush, César secured the back section into a ponytail—this created a base at the center back of her head.

Next, he attached a “Faux César-Do Ponytail” which he custom colored to blend with her blonde shade. To hide and blend the faux ponytail, he incorporated the remainder of her hair into the ponytail, creating one big sexy, messy pony.

  • 5

He then cut her fringe to frame her face, and used his ghd flat iron on the ponytail and fringe to create a shiny finish.

César completed the look with MIZANI HRM Humidity Resistant Mist to secure the look and hold his “César-Do” in place.
