On the Set: Ken Paves and Taylor Swift’s SELF Cover Shoot

Ken Paves and Taylor Swift created a “Love Story” of their own on the set of Swift’s cover shoot for SELF magazine.  “Taylor has amazing naturally curly hair,” explains Paves, and in order to keep those curls look picture perfect, Paves needed untouched, air-dried hair.  “I always like to air-dry curly hair.  It produces the smoothest effect.”

Ken began by lightly misting her ends with water to redefine the curl and open the cuticle.  “Since I wanted to define and ‘amp up’ her curl, I prepped and hydrated her hair with my Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shine Serum by taking random sections and applying it from mid-shaft to the ends,” explains Paves.

Not sure if you’ve heard, but Ken has just released a new line of curling irons!  He went through with a 1 inch barrel working from the nape up, taking random sized sections (smaller for tighter curls) and curling in a spiral pattern to replicate her natural texture. “I am such a huge fan of naturally curly hair and I often seen Taylor and other celebs in photos where their curl has been loosened,” explains Paves.  “I wanted her to be on this cover in all of her curly glory and for her curls to look natural and touchable!”

For the crown, Ken created took the weight and pull of the curls into consideration and created looser curls to make the hair look more natural.

“I allowed her hair to cool and set,” explains Paves.  “Since curly hair tends to be more porous, you have to keep the hair hydrated.  To finish it off, I flipped her head over, and with my hands glistening with shine serum, I shook out her gorgeous, super shiny, glamorous curls working that shine serum from roots to end! The finished result was picture perfect curls!!!!”
