Naya Rivera’s Messy Chignon and Voluptuous Waves

Known as the sharp-tongued cheerleader Santana on the critically-acclaimed FOX series Glee, Naya Rivera infused hosting this year’s New York City GLAAD Media Awards with plenty of pep. The awards show recognized the media industry’s contributions to the LGBT community and tolerance, topics that surely hit close to home with Naya’s character Santana on her hit TV show.

Of course, she had to look great! On hand to help was celebrity stylist Brian Magallones of Exclusive Artists Management, and he helped create two stunning looks for Naya: a messy chignon for the red carpet, and loose, big waves during the show. In the following pages, he shares his tips for re-creating the styles!

“Centering Naya’s bun midway between the crown and the nape gave it a very modern look,” says Brian. Here’s how he created the look:

    1. To start, shampooed with René Furterer KARITÉ intense nourishing shampoo followed by René Furterer KARITÉ intense nourishing mask to get hair in prime condition.

    2. Mist hair with VOLUMEA volumizing conditioning spray. Don’t rinse. Then apply René Furterer VEGETAL MOUSSE throughout hair before blow-drying.

    3. After curling hair with a 1-inch curling iron, create a ponytail halfway between the nape and the crown. Make a bun around the base, making sure the bun doesn’t look too perfect.

    4. To finish the look, apply René Furterer GLOSSING SPRAY for shine and René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY to keep the hair in place.

During the awards show, Naya presented awards wearing a stunning navy blue dress with 1950’s flair. “I decided that loose, voluptuous hair was the best look to go with this dress,” says Brian. Here, Brian gives us the scoop on how to create Naya’s softly glamorous coif.

    1. Naya already had René Furterer VEGETAL MOUSSE in her hair so I simply re-curled hair, this time using a 1 ½-inch barrel curling iron. To soften the curl, brushed out the hair with a Mason Pearson brush.

    2. Smooth away flyaways with a small amount of René Furterer STYLING WAX.

    3. Finally, for hold, use René Furterer VEGETAL FINISHING SPRAY and top it off with René Furterer GLOSSING SPRAY.
