Blended Pixel Color How-To

Just when you were getting used to vivid color and peekaboo pastels—a new haircolor trend has emerged and is taking the color world by storm. The technique? Coloring small sections of hair in whatever pattern you want, which creates movement in the color. The result? A totally unique and modern pixelated effect. Here, Terrence Michael Renk, Global Artistic Director of ProRituals Hair Care, shares his how-to!

    1

To prep, start by folding wax paper in half and then cut about an inch square into each folded square. Unfold the tissue and voila—you have your pixelated pattern.

*Note: The ProRituals Hair & Scalp Therapy (added to Formula A) helps replenish moisture that is taken out of the hair. If you use this during the chemical service, hair will be shiner than you ever thought possible. Plus, it won’t slow down the processing time.

Using ProRituals Hydrate Conditioner, apply it at the scalp so the tissue paper sticks to the hair. You can also use a base haircolor as well if you are doing a base color.

Drop a section of hair on top of the wax paper, then lay the cut wax paper pattern on top of the hair and apply Formula A to the square boxes directly. The tissue paper will protect the other parts of the hair.

Place another piece of wax paper on top and using a permanent marker, draw boxes onto the wax paper, keeping it slightly angled from where the previous box you placed the color is.

  • 5

Lay some conditioner at the scalp, drop another section of hair onto the wax paper and cover it with the patterned wax paper. Apply Formula A to the boxes. The boxes should be slightly offset of each other.

Put another layer of wax paper on top, and mark the areas where you have placed color. The pattern should start to move to the right, diagonal where you place the boxes. Continue Steps 3 through 5. Moving from left to right until you reach the top of the head. Do the same thing on the opposite side of the head, working on staggered angles so you get a pixelated effect.

Alternate Formulas B, C and D, applying them on angles and working from the bottom to the top, in a criss-cross pattern. Do whatever you can do to make it creative. Just work in angles as that the color has movement and flow.
