5 Styling How-Tos from TIGI at NYC Fall Fashion Week

TIGI Catwalk products took a starring role backstage at top fashion shows for Mercedez Benz Fashion A/W 2011 Week in New York City. Three major hair trends emerged from those shows—Downtown Chic, Youthful Braids and ‘70s Volume—and here, the TIGI Creative Team demonstrates, in detail, how to create each look.

    1

Hair: Kevin Ryan and the TIGI Creative Team

    Inspiration: Cool, effortless, downtown-chic

    From the Designer:
“This collection is the essence of a New York woman,” says the designer Richard Chai. “I was inspired by my menswear collection. I wanted a menswear look to be believable in a womenswear line”.

    From the Stylist:
“Richie’s girls are naturally cool and effortlessly chic,” explains Kevin Ryan. “We’re just enhancing their natural looks. This is the girl that doesn’t have to try to look cool. This is what her hair looks like when she gets out of bed. The hair is imperfect but really beautiful; this girl can walk out the door knowing exactly who she is.

    Get the Look:
    1.
Start by blow drying the hair and running your fingers through the ends to create a dry, natural and unpolished texture.

    2. After parting hair in the middle, use Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost to create sexy volume at the crown.

    3. Spritz the hair with Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo, focusing on the ends to add additional texture.

    4. On straight hair, use a Nalu Waver by Rsession Tools to create a natural-looking wave.

    5. Finish with Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look Lock Hairspray to keep the look in place.”

Hair: Maria Kovacs, Marco Iafrate and the TIGI Creative Team

Inspiration: Strong, sexy, young women. Sexy for herself, and not for her boyfriend. Ideas taken from the past but made new and fresh.

    From the Designers:
“We want people to appreciate the details and fabrics, and we wanted the hair to complement this,” say Maayan and Nikki, the line’s designers. “We chose these girls because of their characters and personality. We wanted the girl to look like they just rolled out of bed and put some lipstick on.”

    Get the Look:
    1.
Start by adding Catwalk Your Highness Thickening Gel Crème from root to tip to create extra texture, so the hair looks a day or two old.

    2. Use Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost at the roots and over the entire head to dirty the hair up, then finger dry the hair to lock in the volume and make it not too polished. When you use a brush you can really lose the charm.

    3. Next, create a side part with a heavy sweeping fringe from right to left, parallel to the far end of the eyebrow. Separate hair into two large sections, top and bottom.

    4. Twist the top section into the shape of a “half-moon” and spray both sections generously with Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look Lock Hairspray.

    5. Back-comb each section and spray again, then flat iron the ends to make the hair appear wispy—like she just stepped out the ocean.

    6. With the bottom section, create a ponytail and twist it into a messy chignon towards the right side of the head. Fasten with hair pins.

    7. Back comb and tease the top section and brush it to create smoothness. Connect the two sections to create the illusion of a faux bob.

Hair: Odile Gilbert and the TIGI Creative team

Inspiration: A dream world with a fantasy element – pretty, light and fresh.

    From the Designer:
“This look represents a romantic girl with a good imagination,” says designer Erin Fetherston. “The hair is pretty and feminine with elements of fantasy. It is very ethereal.”

    Get the Look:
    1.
Prep the hair with Catwalk Curlesque Lightweight Mousse to add volume to the hair then section it in from ear to ear. The front section should be really flat and clean; try braiding the front section across the hairline and pin it at the ear.

    2. Gently back brush the back section to add more texture and volume. Incorporate real hair pieces and braid all the hair with gold and silver thread entwined through the plait.

    3. Wrap over the front section of the hair and pin at the base of the head, then wrap the loose hair at the back around the hair piece and pin.

    4. The final look should resemble a crown—really romantic and whimsical. Finally, use Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look Lock Hairspray to hold the hair in place.

Hair: Bob Recine and the TIGI Creative Team

    Inspiration: Classic, Simple and Chic

    From the Stylist:
“For the Halston presentation, I wanted the hair to represent the brand—classic, chic and youthful—without distracting from the clothing,” says Bob Recine. “I thought a perfectly styled braid was the best way to express this.”

    Get the Look:
    1.
Prep hair with the Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look Lock Hairspray.

    2. Spray the product onto a brush and use a flat iron to make hair perfectly straight. Spraying the product on a brush versus directly on hair creates more sheen and buoyancy.

    3. Next, make a center part and tie hair in a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Braid the hair until it runs out and fasten the end with black hair elastic.

    4. Cover the top hair elastic with a black piece of fabric. (The team cut black stockings into long thick strips and tied them over the elastic. It’s a great trick to teach your clients to do if they rip a pair of tights!)

    5. To finish the look, spray Catwalk Your Highness Firm Hold Hairspray all over head to hold hair in place.

Hair: Kevin Ryan and the TIGI Creative Team

    Inspiration: Sexy ’70s Girl

    From the Stylist:
“The look I created for this show is a cool, sexy, downtown girl with loose, 1970s-style waves,” says Kevin Ryan. “I wanted it to look like this is a second or third day blow dry versus fresh from the salon. I created a matte finish on the hair to make it look more cool than luxurious.”

    Get the Look:
    1.
Part the hair in the middle and apply Catwalk Sleek Mystique Fast Fixx Style Prep wherever there is a bend in the hair.

    2. At the crown of the head, apply Catwalk Your Highness Root Boost to add volume then take a large round brush and blow dry the entire head creating a slight bend to the ends.

    3. After the blow dry, use a large curling iron and curl hair under at the front of the hairline. Roll the front pieces inward to create an on-base roller (on the crown of the head) and secure with a clip.

    4. Curl the back of the head and create off-base rollers (hanging loosely below the head). Spray each roller with Catwalk Sleek Mystique Look Lock Hairspray to secure the hold.

    5. Let the hair set for 20–30 minutes then remove the rollers and brush out the hair. To finish the look, apply Catwalk Session Series Transforming Dry Shampoo to roughen up the look of the hair.
