When we posted this color by Los Angeles-based stylist Chantelle Truong @hello.chantelle on our Instagram page a few days ago, the likes were staggering—almost 25,000 in 24 hours and hundreds more comments! The consensus? EVERYONE—stylists and clients alike—wanted this color.

 

So just what is it about this shade that makes it such a sensation? Maybe it’s the multidimensional layers of metallic colors; or the underlying, on-trend smoky hues. The modern, perfectly-coiffed bob on client (and beauty-blogger Yueh Chu) probably doesn’t hurt. 

 

Luckily, Chantelle graciously shared her formula with BTC—so get your screenshot fingers ready, this is one formula you’ll want to save!

 

Editor’s Note: In an email we received from Chantelle, she refers to herself as an “aspiring” hairstylist. Umm…Chantelle? I think it’s safe to say you’ve made it to pro status with this one!

 

Note: Chantelle’s client started with about 1 inch of regrowth with some brassy bands near the regrowth line.

  • Formula A (Lightener):

  • Formula C:

    Lunar Tides Semi Permanent Color in Smokey Purple + 1 pump Olaplex No.2 (to dilute color)

FORMULA STEPS

1. Section the hair into four clean quadrants for neat application, and apply Formula A to regrowth, making sure to keep a few centimeters away from the scalp to avoid hot roots, and carefully lighten the areas with brassy bands. Process for about 30 minutes.

2. Perform a bleach wash from midlengths to ends to revive the prelightened hair and remove the existing semi-permanent color.

3. Using the same quadrant sectioning, apply Formula B about 2 inches down, and process for about 15 minutes

4. Apply Formula C, smudging where the two formulas meet for a blending effect. Process for another 15 to 20 minutes.

5. Rinse and apply Olaplex No.2. Process for 30 minutes.

6. Finish with Schwarzkopf Bonacure Color Save Silver Shampoo and Sebastian Professional Penetraitt Strengthening and Repair Conditioner.
