FORMULA STEPS

1. Start in the back and surface paint Formula A in medium-sized brick-lay sections. “I always use foils for every bleaching service, but I don’t fold my foils,” notes Bea. “I just stack each section on top of the other—only separated by a foil.”

Note: Bea’s balayage placement depends on her client’s head shape. Sometimes she’ll paint four equal sections around the head, and sometimes she’ll brick-lay in which she alternates between one and two sections per row as she works up the back of the head.

2. Once you reach the front, switch to Formula B and continue surface painting but in diagonal sections. Process for about 40 to 45 minutes, then remove the foils.

3. Rinse, then towel-dry. To tone, apply Formula C from the roots to the midlengths and Formula D from the midlengths to the ends.

4. Process for 20 minutes. In the last 5 to 7 minutes, comb from the roots to the ends so Formulas C and D seamlessly melt together.

5. For the style, prep with Living Proof Style Lab Flex Hairspray. Then, use a 1¼-inch curling iron to create loose waves. “I usually curl the hair tightly going toward the back, then spray Style Lab Flex Hairspray again before running my fingers through them for a beachy look,” shares Bea.
