Curly Color Correction: Brassy Blorange To Smoky Silver
By Emma Mendez
When color correcting curly and textured hair, there’s no such thing as using too many treatments. Just ask color correction specialist Emma Mendez (@emmys_style), who applied three different treatments throughout this eight-hour service. Keep scrolling to learn more about how Emma safely transformed brassy blorange strands into a smoky silver hue WITHOUT disrupting her client’s curl pattern!
Total chair time: 8 hours (including 3 hours of foiling!)
Who is this technique for + who isn’t it for?
Emma did a global lightening technique on this client, which she says she loves on textured and curly hair. “The color enhances every coil, bringing out every strand’s natural body and bringing attention to them and light to the face,” she explains. However, Emma stressed it’s important these clients understand the importance of at-home care because protecting the integrity of the curls is crucial.
That being said, Emma says she would never recommend this to any client who is lower-maintenance (because it requires coming back to the salon fairly often) or clients who don’t have healthy curls. “If the client is trying to get back her curls then it would be best for her to treat the hair first, and once the hair is at its best state health-wise, then the stylist could continue or proceed with a color service,” she notes.
How long does this color last?
Emma says this particular look could last up to two months if the hair is properly washed (meaning, with very cold water) and using the correct products for at-home use.
What is the maintenance for this technique?
- In-Salon Maintenance: If it’s been more than six to eight weeks, a root touch-up could be required. Otherwise, this client may only need a retone to refresh their color and a deep treatment.
- At-Home Maintenance: Clients should wash or co-wash with a sulfate free shampoo and deep condition. “When curly hair is prelightened, we must always keep in mind that there must be a balance between moisture and proteins. By doing so, this will make sure that the curls are not lost. I always recommend Olaplex No.3 for at-home treatment, which helps build bonds,” says Emma.
What is the pricing for this color correction?
“Pricing for this particular look could run anywhere from $400 to $700,” shares Emma. “These types of looks do not take two to three hours and could take, at times, anywhere between five hours and 10 hours depending on the severity of the root regrowth (if any), length and density of the hair.”
