4 Things to Know About V-Light Extensions: The Application Method Designed for Fine & Thinning Hair

Your fine and thin-hair clients are no longer weary of the extensions conversation thanks to V-Light Extensions: The latest innovation in extension installation methods. Whether your clients have naturally fine hair or are experiencing seasonally or medically-induced hair loss, read on for everything you need to know about V-Lights, how they differ from other extensions installation methods and most importantly, how they can transform your clients’ hair density in the most discreet and non-damaging way possible.

What are V-Light Extensions? Here’s everything you should know:

V-Light is an extensions application method (not a specific kind of hair) that pairs perfectly with Philocaly Hair extensions. The new method uses UV light to adhere individual strands of hair to create a natural look without the need for bonds, tabs or wefts.

Here’s everything your clients should know about V-Light extensions:

  • Since V-Lights are undetectable, they are perfect for filling in low-density areas of hair like the hairline and top of the head
  • The application process includes a UVA-emitting LED light at 395nm, which is approved by the FDA for medical use and poses no risk to skin or eyes
  • The LED curing device generates minimal heat, ensuring a comfortable experience for clients
  • V-Light can be used with any type of hair or hair extension

Here’s what your clients should know about V-Light maintenance:

  • With proper application and maintenance, V-Light Extensions can last five to eight weeks
  • Avoid heat at the attachment points
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo
  • Avoid saturating the attachment points with oils, conditioners and alcohols

Who are V-Light Extensions best suited for? Here’s what to know:

This installation method is designed for clients with hair loss, fragile, fine and thinning hair. The weightless, invisible bonds allow the extensions to seamlessly blend into even the thinnest of hair sections without weighing it down or causing further damage.

Here’s who can benefit from V-Light Extensions:

  • Clients with naturally fine or thin hair: For those clients whose hair is too fine to hide traditional extension points of attachments, V-Lights will blend seamlessly into the hairline, part line and fine and thin areas.
  • Clients with alopecia: V-Light Extensions can conceal small alopecia spots by being placed around the affected area.
  • Clients experiencing postpartum Hair Loss: V-Light Extensions won’t damage shedding hair and will shed along with natural hair.
  • Post-chemotherapy clients: V-Light Extensions can be used after chemotherapy, once hair regrowth begins.

What to know about the V-Light Extensions installation process:

The V-Light installation method integrates the extension hair with natural hair using a bonding agent and a curing lamp. The process involves attaching each extension strand to an individual natural hair strand, applying the bonding agent, combing and saturating it at the attachment point, then holding the curing light over the attachment point to ensure proper UV light penetration.

The application process takes about 30 to 60 minutes per section, depending on the amount of hair needed and the size of the head.

How V-Light Extensions compares to other extension types—explained:

Since the V-Light method’s attachment points are invisible, they’re ideal for areas where other methods are too visible (such as the hairline or part line). For denser areas of hair, other standard or individual installation methods should be used.

Here are all of the ways V-Light Extensions differ from other methods like wefts, bonds and tabs:

  • Traditional single-strand methods use between 0.5 to 1 gram of hair per strand, V-Light uses significantly less hair.
  • V-Lights are best suited for filling in finer areas of hair (instead of adding length and volume) and global installation is not recommended due to the time, longevity and cost.
  • When hair is installed using V-Light, it can not be reused, it is designed for single-use to maintain the quality and integrity of the hair.
  • V-Light installation is heat-free, while other application methods (like K-Tip) utilize heat to melt keratin bonds, which can be more stressful on natural hair and scalp over time.
  • Since the point of attachment is weightless, V-Lights are more comfortable for clients with fine or thinning hair.
