Takeaway Tips:
You can learn Chrissy’s full technique in her 90-minute course, but we’re teasing these tips you need to know now!
Tip #1: Use The Client’s Natural Depth To Make Foils POP!
Chrissy’s go-to lightening technique is a combination of teasylights and babylights. To make sure her highlights stand out, Chrissy leaves out diagonal slices between foils when working in the center back section. Why? “I like to leave out these triangle sections so my highlights really pop against the client’s natural depth.” The amount of hair left out between foils can vary throughout your sections—and that’s OK! “I like to use a more organic placement and really work with the client’s natural head shape when applying my foils for a more natural finished result,” Chrissy explains.
Pro Tip: To create more contrast and dimension, gradually increase the amount of hair left out between foils when working in the center back section.
Tip #2: Use Tension For Better Blends
When first applying lightener, Chrissy will place the product an inch below the root and fully saturate down. Then, she will use her fingers to hold the clean ends and the bottom of the foil firmly and begin to feather the lightener up into the root area. The extra tension keeps the foil and section in place while also creating a seamless blend.
Tip #3: Send Blonde Clients Home With A (Hydrating) Purple Toning Shampoo To Keep Their Color Bright & Healthy
At-home maintenance is A MUST for blondes. That’s why Chrissy sends her clients home with the Moroccanoil® Blonde Perfecting Purple Shampoo. “It’s one of my favorites because it’s so moisturizing and our blonde clients really need extra love—especially in the summer,” she explains. Another great thing about this product is that it contains a violet pigment. “With other purple shampoos the underlying pigment is either blue or purple but because this shampoo is violet, it will tackle both yellow and orange tones.”
Pro Tip: Help clients avoid over-using purple shampoo by advising they wait two to three weeks after their service. “They should really only be using purple shampoo when they feel dull, and two weeks is a good jump off point depending on how often they wash their hair,” Chrissy explains.

Have Questions? Chrissy Has Answers!
One of the benefits of watching a course on BTC University? Artists are able to answer your questions in REAL TIME! Here are some technical questions viewers had for Chrissy during her livestream:
Question: How do you avoid foil slippage around the nape and hairline?
Answer: “My tried and true trick to avoid slipping foils is first to fold the foil over my comb. Then, I lift my section up, place the foil and when I bring the section down I kind of pull on the hair as I push up with the foil. Another tip is to make sure your lightener formula isn’t too runny for the hairline. You actually want it a bit thicker because once you lay the product on the hair it helps lock that foil in. ”
Q: Do you always apply a shadow root to blonde clients?
A: “Honestly, I will apply a shadow root and gloss (a color melt) to about 90 percent of my clients. The reason for that is, if you have a client who is asking to be a bright platinum blonde, an overall gloss will also give them a nice, soft grow out. That’s what great about a color melt, you can still achieve an extremely bright end result. Remember, your color melts don’t have to be dark, but the grow-out will be less harsh!”
