Starting Out: 3 Tips For Creating The Perfect Bob/Lob Perimeter

Bobs and lobs are one of the most requested cuts right now, but the final look will only be as good as the foundation, which is why you can never neglect the perimeter. While sharing the stage at BTC One Night Stand, LA-based cutters Sal Salcedo (@salsalhair) and Buddy Porter (@buddywporter) who have 160k and 58k Instagram followers respectively, shared their best tips for creating the perfect bob/lob perimeter. Keep reading to find out their top three tips!

1. The Initial Cut

On dry hair, start in the back and cut a straight line to create a really strong shape. “Once that strong line is created, even if you point-cut into it, it will remain strong,” said Buddy.

From here, you can do one of two things:

  1. Point-cut with the scissors completely vertical to soften the line without changing anything.

  2. Point-cut with the scissors at an angle to create texture and movement at the bottom.

2. If She Has Thicker Hair

For clients with thicker hair, Sal says he likes to have fun with it and point-cut the initial line into the hair to remove weight automatically.

3. Blending The Front With The Back

Rather than just eyeball where to cut the front sections, Buddy says to overdirect the front sections back and cut everything to that initial guide. Doing this will preserve length in the front that you can customize later.
