You might feel a little bit crazy if you’ve had a client request a “Butterfly Cut” or a “Bottleneck Bob,” but trendy buzzwords like these have been circulating the internet with seemingly no end. Ultimately, a lot of trends come down to the basics: lots of layers and fringe.

However, creating the cut is only half the battle. Without proper styling techniques, the volume and depth put into these trendy cuts can’t come to life. That’s why we’ve rounded up five must-have styling tips to help you send your clients out the door with an IG-worthy style.

Keep reading to learn the key to a lasting blowout, tips to accentuate layers and how to tackle styling bangs.

1. This is the key to a blowout that lasts

Have you ever sent a client out the door and their style starts to frizz immediately? Our NIGHTMARE! To avoid this, you have to make sure “that the hair is 100 percent dry,” says Dali Modesto (@dalidoeshair). Before going in with a round brush to perfect the blowout, Dali rough-dries the hair 85 percent. Then, she uses the last 15 percent to shape the hair and add volume to the finished look.

If your client steps outside and the hair starts to frizz, this is “probably indicating that there is still moisture in the hair,” she adds. That’s why Dali loves Olivia Garden NanoThermic® PowerGrip™ Brushes: They feature extra large vent holes for extra speedy blow-drying.

Pro Tip: Dali never goes without an anti-humidity spray for further protection.

2. For clients with curtain bangs, do this!

If you struggle with blowing out layers or curtain bangs, it might be because you’re using the wrong size brush. “The hair should go around the brush at least one time to create enough bend,” says Karla White (@southernblendboss). This will create the perfect, bouncy finish.

3. Work with your end goal in mind

Not all curls are created equally! Some styles will feature lots of volume and some will appear more subtle. Follow these steps:

How to achieve high-volume: Dali’s advice? Use 1” Olivia Garden NanoThermic® PowerGrip™ Brushes to create tight curls, rocking back and forth as you smooth the hair while making sure the ends are polished.

Create volume at the roots: Dali will use a bigger brush in the Mohawk section for more lift. She uses as many brushes as she can fit when setting the curls, which usually equals 8 to 12 depending on hair density.

Consider this: She will only use this technique for clients with great hair integrity. If the hair is damaged, more fine or prone to tangles, Dali might use a traditional curling iron.

For more subtle volume, swap out a round brush for pins: When the client requests a smoother look with slightly less volume, Dali will pin up the brush curls (instead of setting them in the brush) for a more effortless look with subtle volume. Check out her cutie pincurls below!

4. Follow the shape of the layers as you blow-dry

Cut and color aren’t the only things you should cover during a consultation. Dali likes to have an in-depth consultation that includes a conversation about styling. This is when she will ask how her client prefers to wear their bangs to help guide her when she’s styling.

When it comes to styling layers, “they will tell you all you need to know,” says Dali. She finds clients with layers are the easiest to blowout because you follow the shape of the layers as you dry. Hint: Don’t try to fight the way bangs and layers naturally fall.

Pro Tip: Start by drying the bangs first! Dali always starts her blow-drying at the bangs because once they’re dry, it’s very hard to control and style them.

5. This is the secret to frizz-free blowouts

Oftentimes, stylists will reach for a hair product when trying to eliminate frizz, but did you know your brushes can be just as powerful, too? Jennifer Perlman (@thegirlwithablowdryer) uses Olivia Garden NanoThermic® PowerGrip™ Brushes because of their ionic technology that eliminates frizz and flyaways. The brush also has a unique wavy barrel design that creates an effortless bend in the hair.

Pro Tip: Jennifer will use a square-shaped brush for thick or coarse hair types, but she loves to use the Olivia Garden NanoThermic® PowerGrip Brushes for fine-to-medium hair types.
