3 Tips To Take Platinum Clients To Lived-In Blonde

Natural-looking, lived-in blondes are HOT on our summer trend forecast. But before you start booking transformation appointments, read these pro application techniques and formulas that are designed to avoid any dark, banded roots.

Here’s how you can transition any shade of blonde into a soft, natural-looking grow-out phase that’ll have your clients coming back for more:

1. Use this three-step technique for a seamless blend.

Seamless blonde regrowth is…basically impossible. However, blonding specialist Ashley Gunn (@hairbyashleygunn) shares her three-step tip for creating an undetectable grow-out on her ultra-blonde clients.

Try Ashley’s process:

  1. Always opt for low-volume developer. To avoid breakage when lifting prelightened clients, Ashley does not exceed a 5 to 10-volume developer.
  2. Tease each fine weave for a seamless root. Teasing lays the foundation for blended results by forming a cushion at the root. Each push of the comb separates some of the hair out of each section, resulting in finer weaves.
  3. Create a blended shadow for a soft grow-out. After lightening with Joico Blonde Life Lightening Powder + 10-volume Joico LumiShine® Creme DeveloperAshley tones using:
    1. Joico LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color 6N + 7N + 5-volume LumiShine® Creme Developer at the roots.
    2. LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color 9NA +10V + 5-volume LumiShine® Creme Developer through the mids and ends.

Pro tip: This formula will eliminate any green or brassy tones on Ashley’s previously Level 10 client. Be sure to add neutral tones where necessary for each client!

2. Lift quickly without compromising the integrity of the hair.

Between breakage and brittle hair, there’s plenty of risks that come with being an ultra-blonde client. To protect the integrity of the hair, Jillian Falconer (@manegirljilly) uses strengthening Blonde Life Lightening Powder for a fast AND gentle lift.

This fast-acting lightener is ideal for typically longer blonding appointments. Here’s why:

  • The fast-acting formula trims precious minutes off of your appointment time.
  • One treatment reduces breakage by 54 percent.
  • The formula replenishes the hair with monoi oil, tamanu oil and amino acids like arginine.
  • Each result is healthy-looking—with ZERO additives.

Pro tip: For transitional blondes, Jillian prefers her lightener mixed to the consistency of Greek yogurt—about a 1:1.5 ratio!

3. Use a trio of formulas to achieve global softness.

When tackling full bleach-out clients, award-winning colorist Sharon Mudavanhu (@yogacolourist) formulates three separate formulas to lighten any regrowth, erase strong lines of demarcation and add dimension. For this color specifically, Sharon opts for LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color for global softening.

Here are Sharon’s go-to formulas for seamless blonde transitions:

  • Lighten regrowth: LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color 6N + 20-volume developer
  • Erase lines of demarcation: LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color 8 NWB + 10-volume developer
  • Add dimension: LumiShine® Demi-Permanent Color 9NV + 5-volume developer
