Make More Money With Creative Toner Refresh Services
You’ve been pre-booked for months, there are 10 empty holiday Starbucks cups littering your station, and you are 100% relying on dry shampoo even more than usual—yep, it’s your busy season! While your books may be full, you can STILL squeeze in a few clients with a quick moneymaker: a toner refresh! Keep reading for toning tips and how you can use them to make more money.

Why You Should Offer Creative Toner Refresh Services
- Clients who may be crunched by a holiday budget can still get a service without a full head of blonding, says @wesdoeshair, aka TIGI® Guest Artist Wes Palmer.
- Toning with a few formulas on one head demonstrates to your client that she can’t do this herself at home, says TIGI® U.S. Technical Education Director Renée Valerie (@renee.valerie). “You can charge more this way,” she adds.
- Consider also offering a backbar treatment like the TIGI® Copyright Custom Care SOS Extreme Recovery Treatment and charging a little extra for it (or include it in the price of your toner refresh). Apply it with a bowl and brush for an elevated experience, then let it process for 5 minutes—it returns hair to a virgin-like state in that amount of time!
Toner Application Tips
- If you’re only using one formula on the head, create a shadow root with Wes’s technique: Apply to the base first (leaving out the hairline for a money piece pop). Process for 5 to 10 minutes so the color shifts, then drag to the ends and through the hairline. Let the entire head process until you like the color.
- Try a zigzag parting around the head at the crown to build in automatic dimension, Renee says. The zigzag circle creates high and low points of color, and the top section acts as a veil over the bottom section for even more dimension.
- Both Wes and Renee use combs to pull color through the hair and recommend anything wide-toothed. Just stay away from a pintail comb, which will remove too much color.
