Pixie Maintenance: Reducing Bulk on a Grown-Out Pixie

When your client’s poufy pixie needs a refresh, try this technique by haircutting specialist Jayne Matthews (@jayne_edosalon): “When you’re removing the weight next to the scalp, it’s all about not using elevation unless you want the hair to stick up rather than lay down,” Jayne explains. Press play for a quick demo:

Try Out New Techniques and Tools for Classic Looks: Don’t be afraid to utilize a razor for this classic pixie that may not be groundbreaking—but can give you a new perspective. “We opted for a razor to ensure a softer grow-out process and to make sure we really got the most out of the texture,” shares UK-based cutting duo @thehairbros. 2. Maintainable Layered Haircuts

Through the supermodel volume and butterfly cut craze, our clients LOVE layered looks—but, they’re feeling “blowout burnout” from having to constantly put in the styling work for volume and definition. Offer them wearability through a slightly less layered cut that features more rounded, subtle layering—which looks great air-dried or styled.

3. Trending Short Cuts: Italian & French Bobs

Clients have never been more “in the know” about hair terms: Although lacking the fundamental elements that define each haircut, requests for “Italian” and “French” bobs have never been bigger. Navigating these requests comes down to your consultation, so we’re sharing a shortlist of key questions to ask below.

We reached out to haircutting specialist and ARC™ Scissors Artistic Team Member Victoria Shrager (@victoria.hairart) to learn the consultation questions you can’t skip, get the defining details to know to gauge client comfort for layers, length and more.

Bob Consultations: The Questions You Must Ask

“For bobs (or any haircut), there are some really important questions to set both the stylist and their client up for success to achieve the desired result and the ability to maintain at home,” Victoria explains. Get her cheat sheet below!

  • How short is too short?
  • Do you like to see a lot of texture or do you prefer a more sleek look?
  • Do you like to air dry, heat-style or both?
  • Do you want to see more volume?
  • Do you prefer fringe or no fringe?

Pro Tip: Reference photos are a MUST—be sure to ask for at least three and have your client point out their least favorite details of each photo.

French Bob Breakdown: Chin & Jaw-Skimming Length Options

Victoria shares: “To me, a French bob is a chin or jawbone-length chunky bob with a fringe and tons of layers. This cut works great with any texture or density of hair and is very customizable. Personally, I love how this cut looks air-dried!”

Your Cutting Roadmap to a French Bob:

“This was cut using a combination of a razor to deeply channel cut below her occipital for texture within the shape; and, my ARC™ Scissors The Curve to create a strong outline. We finished with my ARC™ Scissors 30/2 Reversible Blender to add additional texture once we styled her hair and saw how it sat.”

Customizable Shoulder-Length Italian Bobs:

Victoria continues: “An Italian bob is more of shoulder to mid-neck length cut with some face-framing layers. Typically, this cut is more sleek and less layered. It works best heat-styled for the most part unless your hair is naturally silky or has soft texture.”

4. Sabrina Carpenter-Inspired Curtain Bangs

Along with baby blue and corset tops with heart cutouts, we’re officially blaming our client’s refound love for blown-out curtain bangs on the Sabrina effect. Think bouncy, sculpted fringe that can be customized to softly frame the face to complement any client’s features—all while enhancing a variety of cuts like layers, one-lengths or bobs.

Chicago-based extension specialist Justin Revenge (@byjustinrevenge) shares, “Curtain bangs remain one of my favorite curated styles to do. They are a good option because they frame the face softly, add a touch of retro charm and are versatile.” Aka: a fuss-free bang option for new fringe clients!

5. Medium-Length Haircuts

With varying lengths from collarbone to chest, medium-length haircuts are an easy pick for one-length clients or any easy change-up for clients who booked a solo color service. Often paired with layers or bangs, celebrities like Camila Cabello and Joey King have made midlength cuts their staple style—expect clients to follow suit.
