BTC Presents Guy Tang in Chicago

close formula

More than 1,500 #hairporn fans packed into the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago for Guy Tang’s sold out show presented by behindthechair.com. The educational event, made possible by BTC, marked Guy’s first time on stage in four years. During the event, Guy showcased three unbelievable balayage makeovers and demonstrated signature techniques for attendees to take back with them into the salon. “Do you guys want to see some #hairporn?!” Guy shouted as he walked on stage.

During the freewheeling show, Guy talked about the tools and products he has grown to love and shared the story behind what it means to be a “hair slut.” “We have a lot of commitments in our lives that we have to be loyal to,” he said. “Husbands, wives, bills…and here we are trying to commit to a brand, too. And that’s okay! But I like to say, ‘I’m a slut!’ You gotta use what you like to give your clients the results they want.”

Among Guy’s favorite tools and products? His favorite brush, the Framar Color Brush with AccuSoft bristles, his favorite blow-dryer, the BaByliss PRO Italia Brava Professional Ferrari Dryer and his favorite technique—breaking the base. “You need that in your arsenal!” he said.

Here are the exclusive formulas from Guy’s three color transformations.

Catherine

Guy used his signature “Diamonds in the Sky” technique (yes, it’s named after the Rihanna song) to give Catherine a natural, L.A.-inspired look that had warm undertones, but was icy on the ends. “She looks like she just stepped off the beach!” Guy noted.

Color Formula

Base-break/Base shifting: Redken Blonde Idol Clear + 1-volume Redken Pro-Oxide Developer

Alissa

Alissa’s rose gold locks were created using Schwarzkopf’s Igora Royal Metallics, which Guy says he “cannot live without.” To achieve this on-trend color, Guy applied a transition color first, then toned with a pink champagne—creating a beautiful blonde with just a kiss of color.

Ainhu

This insanely gorgeous tropical sunset color melt is dramatic and sexy, but a shadow root makes it appear lived in and spontaneous. Paired with a texturized lob, it is truly breathtaking.

Bonus! Guy performed one other makeover before the big show—on BTC’s own Mary Rector-Gable! To achieve Mary’s rose gold color, Guy used Artego Balayage Bleach with 40-volume lightener. He then toned her regrowth with Schwarzkopf Professional BLONDME Toning Cream in Sand before glazing with Wella Color Touch Instamatic Pink Dream for 20 minutes.
