Products Used
1. Service: Blending For Gray Long-Lasting Coverage
Toning with a root smudge? This will provide longer-lasting coverage on clients with gray hairs. Before applying an all-over toner (or melting multiple formulas), Carolynn recommends applying Redken Color Gels Lacquers to the root area. By dragging this permanent color down and blending into Redken Shades EQ, this will prolong high-impact color results for a seamless blend.
Follow These Steps:
- Start by painting random teasylights and highlights in foils throughout—this will create ribbons of light and will add pops of brightness in the finished brunette color.
- Apply Color Gels Lacquers permanent color with 20-volume developer to the root area and drag it down toward the mids using a comb. Perfect for grays? The gel consistency glides across the hair and fully penetrates stands for ultra-saturation and coverage. Process for 30 minutes.
- Then, immediately apply Redken Shades EQ from the mids to ends and melt the shades together. Process everything for 20 minutes, then rinse.

2. Service: Maintain Brightness Around The From Hairline
For brunettes who want to see brightness around the face, Carolynn recommends leaving 1 inch (depending on density) of hair out around the hairline before toning—and 1.5 inches for clients with baby hairs and breakage! She tones this section last with the lowest developer (typically 10-volume) for a subtle sun-kissed effect.
- Offer A Face-Framing Foils: For brunette clients requesting a money piece, Carolynn charges an extra 50 dollars to her color service for hairline foils to create the desired brightness.
3. Service: Level 3 Or Darker?! Try This Kicker
Offer toning services to even your darkest-haired clients (Level 3 and darker!) by giving them a rich and reflective glow.
- Try This: Carolynn recommends adding Redken Shades EQ 3N and adding a yellow kicker. The yellow and gold combination will reflect the sun for a high-shine finish, plus this is a great refresh service to offer in between color appointments.
