5 Blonding & Styling Tips From The Ulta Beauty Pro Team

Blonding and styling tips? Comin’ right up! This year’s BTC Show may have been a little different, but the Ulta Beauty Pro Team didn’t hold back on the education when they kicked off Day 1 of our digital show! Keep scrolling to learn a timesaving trick for blonde regrowth, how to elevate your styles with craft store finds, a secret for creating feature-accentuating waves AND how to give textured hair some added volume!

1. Timesaving Trick For Blondes With Months Of Regrowth

The quickest way to refresh a blonde with months of new growth? Work with her built-in shadow root, says Ulta Beauty Senior Vice President Salon Services & Trend Nick Stenson (@nickstenson). And you can do that in one step by brick laying all the way down the back of the head, leaving the front sections out so she can still have that brightness she craves where it matters most.

2. Elevate Your Ponies With Twine

If you want to add some drama to your ponies, put down the hair ties and instead use twine or string. To create some volume on the sides while maintaining the length, Ulta Beauty Chief Artistic Director Ammon Carver (@ammoncarver) wrapped twine around the pony about halfway down.

An added bonus? You can easily use this pony as your base for an editorial style!

3. How To Add Volume When Styling Textured Hair

Before you pick up a curling iron to enhance your client’s natural texture, Ulta Beauty Pro Team Member Pekela Riley (@pekelariley) recommends pre-stretching the hair first. Stretching her strands out will leave some of micro-texture in tact while also giving your style some added volume.

4. Get Creative With Your Upstyles

To give her boho-inspired updo some texture and dimension, Ulta Beauty Pro Team Member Danielle Keasling (@danielle.keasling) pinned a piece of ribbon in and then used the end of a rattail comb to pull pieces of hair through just a bit so it’s a loop. “The cleaner you do it, the more loopy texture you’re going to get,” she notes. “The more organic you do it, you’re going to get a little more boho chic.”

This technique works great on any type of material that has a grid-like pattern, not just ribbon!

5. Key Sections For Hair Contouring Waves

Feature-accentuating waves? Yes please! There are two key sections in the face frame that will bring in the cheekbone and open up and elongate the eye. Here’s what Ulta Beauty Pro Team Member David Lopez (@davidlopezzz) does:

  • Take a small section at a diagonal from the temple to the top of the ear. Holding the curling iron vertically, curl toward the face and gently slide it out to create an elongated, stretched out wave.

  • Then, take a triangle section directly above that and curl away from the face to create a beautiful face-framing wave.
