Have Hair Glosses & Blowouts Overtaken The Day-to-Day Salon Services?

Short answer, no—long answer, kind of? Although blowouts have been a coveted salon speciality since, always, salons have seen a HUGE demand for glossy blowouts on the weekly rather than just at the end of a color appointment.

Although you know how to blow-dry, you may not know the key tips to building a blowout your clients want to spend money on. Thankfully, you know we have you covered…

5 Steps You’re Probably Skipping for A Classic Blowout

This list goes beyond the basics and may challenge your everyday blowout routine. Instead of just doing what you always have, read through these tips to create the best classic blowout look with techniques you’re probably skipping over.

  1. Proper tension—Remember, you are straightening the hair first, not just curling the ends.
  2. SKIP the pre-dry step—That’s right, blow-dry every section wet. Pre-drying the head alters root direction, lift and shine. The more concentrated you keep each section’s heat and tension, the better.
  3. Blow-dry every section in every direction—We’re used to stretching the hair away from the face  but really, the hair should be dried in EVERY direction for the max amount of volume and hold. Wait until your last pass to direct the hair where you want it to live.
  4. Dry texture spray—Be sure your product choice is on the chalkier side instead of a wet spray. This ensures the longest lasting style.
  5. WAIT until your style is set—Allow rollers, brushes, pins, ANYTHING to fully cool to hold the proper shape.

Why Your Blowouts Are Making Your Clients’ Extensions Obvious

The biggest tell-tale sign of extensions are multi-textures in the hair—even more than a choppy perimeter. A lot of times, the culprit is blowdryers with too explosive of air flow and heat saturation.

How does this happen? Here’s what you can do…

  • A lot of blowdryers’ airflow is not concentrated and will dry the outer most cuticle of extensions, leaving the inner layer damp and prone to frizz or expansion.
  • That is why extension educator Allison Moncheck (@theunorthodoxstylist) uses the Olivia Garden Super HP Hair Dryer. “My Super HP Hair Dryer is powerful, lightweight and seals in moisture while eliminating frizz,” she says.
  • “I also use the Nanothermic Power Grip Round Brush to grip the extensions and create the perfect amount of tension to smooth the hair.”

Heat-Conscious Tips For Curly-to-Straight Blowouts

“The smoother you get the hair with the blowout, the less heat you have to use with the flat iron,” says curly hair expert and educator Brendnetta Ashley @edgybgirl)

Here are Brendnetta’s tips to prep for the perfect silk press:

  • Begin with a leave-in conditioner, sectioning the hair off in controlled sections and detangling.
  • “I like to use the nozzle attachment on my Super HP Hair Dryer with a paddle brush to create body and smoothness,” she explains.
  • The base and mids must be dry before the ends. If you’re giving your clients’ fragile ends as much heat as their healthy base, you’re guaranteeing breakage.
