5 Short Hair Styling Tips From Stephanie Brinkerhoff

Short hair is having a moment. From the über-trendy lob to the ever-classic bob, shoulder-grazing lengths and even closer crops look incredibly chic. But shorter lengths can confuse clients—how do they style? And what about updos? ghd Ambassador (and BTC’s updo guru!) Stephanie Brinkerhoff breaks it down.

Everyday Styles For Lob Cuts
“Lobs are very popular right now, and the good news is they are super easy to style,” Steph shares. “If your client is new to the lob game, here are some tips to help her become a master at styling it.”

1. Beachy waves
Steph’s go-to lob look? Soft, beachy waves. She created these waves using the ghd platinum styler. The shape of it allows you to create a really loose curl with straighter ends. Steph loves this look with a center part and a little texturizing spray.

2. Undone texture
“Lived-in” is the look your clients want, and your best bet for this style is a wand like the ghd curve classic wave wand. “It gives you just the right amount of wave that doesn’t look TOO curly,” Steph says.

Glam Styles For Short Hair
“Short hair, don’t care!” Steph says. “Short hair can do a lot more than you think.” Steph has three tips for making the most out of shorter locks.

1. Give the top and sides some interest.
If you’re going for an updo, don’t focus on creating bulk or volume in the back like you would with long hair. Instead, focus on making the top and sides interesting. Try creating texture with the ghd creative curve wand, then do a tucked crown braid.

2. Keep it relaxed!
Nothing makes short hair look even shorter than a sleek, stiff hairstyle. Steph always goes for loose, low, curly updos on her shorties. Take advantage of short layers and leave lots of face-framing strands out. The perfect size curling iron for a relaxed curl on short hair is the ghd classic wave wand.

3. Turn up the volume.
Whether you do a full-on Afro or loose beach curls, more volume = the illusion of more hair. You don’t have tons of hair to work with, so you can get away with an extreme curly look like this without it being too time-consuming. Create a fun messy look using the ghd curve classic wave wand or the ghd platinum styler. For a bouncier curl, use the ghd classic curl iron.
