4 Ways To Reduce Physical Strain When Blow-Drying

How To Save Your Shoulders & Wrists Years Of Strain Behind The Chair

We don’t hit the gym, we just use our blowdryers—all day, every day. Seriously… the strain that comes with a bombshell blowout is no joke. But, Portland-based Olivia Garden Educator Ambrosia Carey (@ambrosiacarey) is sharing four ways to reduce strain on your body when working behind the chair.

Below, learn how to adjust your body position to reduce shoulder strain, how to create strong tension in your blowout technique (not your body!) and the proper way to release your brush.

4 Ways To Adjust Body & Hand Position To Reduce Strain

1. Stand to the side of your sections: When you blow-dry, do not stand directly above of your section—this will force you to raise your shoulders and cause strain. Instead, stand at the client’s side as you work to allow your shoulders to drop.

Plus, Ambrosia says this provides increased mobility as you work through your round brush set. Try her go-to dryer, Olivia Garden SuperHP™ High Performance Dryer.

2. If that’s uncomfortable for you, try this: Flip the handle of your Olivia Garden NanoThermic® Speed XL Brush to face toward you and step back—this position works because it allows your shoulders to drop, too. See the difference below!

3. How to create tension within your blowout (not on your body): “You want to get as much tension as possible, so take the ends of the hair, wrap them around the face of your brush and pull it up.” Ambrosia always reaches for the NanoThermic® Speed XL Brush to further reduce strain, as the heat-resistant, anti-static ionic bristles glide through all hair textures while hydrating the cuticle, eliminating frizz and adding shine.

4. When you release your brush from the hair, less is more! There’s no need to put your whole arm into it: “Just rotate the brush as you exit the head,” Ambrosia explains.
