“This style was very popular in the ’30s and ’40s, mostly known as the ‘Greaser’ look,” Matty explains. “The main feature of this style is being able to create visible comb and part lines. So having an oil or water-based product, like POMADE—which is water-soluble—will help create a slightly damp, slicked texture, while also giving the look a lot of hold and shine.”

This style is for your client that is looking for that modern James Dean-vibe. “It’s the male version of Beyoncé’s ‘I woke up like this.’ The style is effortless and has volume and movability,” Matty explained. So what’s the key to creating this style? The matte finish. “If the styling product has an oil-base, it can weigh the hair down which kills volume. Choosing a product like Super-Dry will amplify the volume and give the look a soft finish.” 

Look #3: Gritty, Rockstar Texture

Style Features:

• Extreme separation
• A lot of definition
• Aggressive texture

Ideal Client: Clients with any type of hair texture.

PRO TIP: If the client has ultra-fine hair but still wants this kind of look, prep the hair with PRIMER and use a texture powder before working in CLAYMORE.

“Because this style features such aggressive separation, it’s really important to choose a product that has an extreme hold and doesn’t have an oil base,” Matty explains. “Claymore has a beeswax base, so the style will stay in place all day. Oil-based clay products tend to break down throughout the day, meaning the style will fall flat after awhile.”
